Joshua Redman

I just picked up Joshua Redman Elastic Band "Momentum." Wow! I particularly like track 11, Double Jeopardy, with Redman on alto, Brian Blade on drums, Flea on bass, Sam Yahel on organ and Peter Bernstein on guitar. Flea can groove like anyone, and totally locks with the kickdrum. The picallo snare sounds amazing. Great CD! (Nonesuch 79864-2)

Joshua Redman is a fantastic saxophonist and this is one of his best. You should also check out the work he's done with SF Jazz Collective. They cover compositions by established jazz composers: Coltrane, Hancock, and others. And each member contributes an original. The venerable Bobby Hutchenson is part of the group. Great Stuff!!

Anthony,

Thanks for this. If you like "Bay Area" jazz artists, I'm sure you're familiar with ex-Journey drummer Steve Smith - and if you like reworked classic jazz covers, you should check out Steve Smith/Michael Zilber "Reimagined, Vol. 1: Jazz Standards" from 2003. I'm not sure if there have been subsequent volumes.

Cheers,
Mike
