Little radios

Posted by: Top Cat on 08 February 2002

Hi folks.

Was just in my dealer's, squaring up for my new cables (which arrived yesterday) and noticed they are selling a little radio, a mono thingie, in a wood finish. Can't remember the name, but it was around £100. As I'm looking for a stand-alone radio for the kitchen and bedroom (portable enough to shift as required) I thought it would be ideal, but before I start getting carried away, I wondered if anyone had any alternative suggestions for a relatively inexpensive radio, LW not required, Stereo not required, ability to sound good very much required.

Anyone help?

Speaker is too small. Expensive for what they are.

if the governments grand plan takes place you will end up with a useless object by 2010 when the FM transmissions cease

Tivoli

Yes, they look cute, don't they? They're good for kitchen use: reception is excellent, and the sound ain't too bad.

There is a stereo option, by the way: all you need is another one of those little boxes.

I did ask about Roberts but the shop were adamant that the Tivoli radio was miles ahead. Of course, I haven't heard it yet, but it sure done look good, huh?

According to Ruark, Tivoli's UK distributor, there's a stereo version due here in September/October. This will be a 2 box design with 1 speaker per box. I'm told that there's also a separate sub-woofer on the horizon too!

Cheers

Irritatingly, this little radio does not have long wave - anyone any ideas on any that do?

I heard one of these at Christmas. It sounds very good considering the size of the thing . It fills a room very nicely with quite a full (reflex port assisted) sound. Treble is not super extended, but hey, its a full range driver.

The cost is US$100.

There was a very favourable review in a recent issue of Listener magazine.

So many accomplishments.

I was in Grafitti Audio with a friend a few months ago and they had a Model 1 playing. We both noted how the little thing really sang. Almost bought one as an impulse purchase on the spot.

Last summer I almost bought one of these in mint condition for $15 from an estate sale but someone snatched it up just as I noticed it.

Too bad. Right now there are a couple KLH 21s for sale on Ebay. One is sitting at $127 with a couple hours left (and another at $47 with 3+ days).

Broader question for the forum - does anyone know how good the old KLH tuners are (e.g., the KLH 18)? I am looking for a cool old one for my kit and can't yet afford at NAT.

I'd bet the Tivoli sounds better than the KLH - those early transistors were the models for Compact Disc sound.

But I'd buy a KLH myself

I bought a Tivoli like Jun's at Bristol. It was one of only three things that made a decent sound there.

Richard - I stand corrected

It is rather interesting that since this thread started when one never saw these radios in a shop - now if the shop is selling Naim one sees a Tivoli

A nice bit of marketing

I just took delivery of one of these little units and am impressed. They are solidly constructed (China) and have a terrific tactile feel. The retro appearance is well done. As others have pointed out, their tuner is quite good and I am able to pull in relatively weak FM jazz stations from my first floor office (surrounded by lots of florescent transformers, two computer monitors, a laptop and a desktop - not a friendly environment) with their included antenna. The power supply is internal, no ugly wall-wart.

You can adjust the balance on the unit, and it comes with very long cables for connecting the two units together (~12'). The sound is very good - best I've heard in an office without having a dedicated Naim system. The mids sound good and the bass is quite sufficient for an office. A subwoofer ($80) is also available, though I do not see the need for one at this point.

One feature that I was unaware of is the ability to also connect my PC's audio output to the unit (simultaneously with an external CD player). This is a great time to ditch my crappy PC speakers (Harmam/Kardons).

Overall, I am quite happy. Can't beat the $160 price. I also pleases me to no end that this little unit spanks the Bose Waveradio.
