Great Recordings

Just a thread for music you throw on the gramophone, just expecting a simple listen, then you're blown away by how good it sounds. I'm not talking obvious ones like DSOtM or Naim label stuff. Just little gems that sound amazing.

For me, it's this, on vinyl (best I've ever heard):

sorry i can't find a good image.

Beethoven Piano Sonatas No 30/31/32,
op 109/110/111

Maurizo Pollini

on DGG (two disks)

of all music i have heard, this music always leaves me the most uplifted and energized.

Mike, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on how you hear a lot of world music (example above and others). I'm not taking the mick by the way Winker

Mat, I'll answer in lieu of Mike.

As I like to say, all music is world music, except for music from Jupiter, etc. But of the genre commonly known as world music, here are a few of my favorites:

Salif Keita - Soro

Milton Nascimento - Milton

Omar Sosa - Afreecanos

Kartik Seshadri - Raga Rasa: That Which Colors the Mind

Enjoy!

Best,
Fred

That's interesting Mike, it moves me more than any other. I love all genres of music, but I find world often has a stronger emotional content when you just sit back and listen - there's a honesty, missing in even my favourite western music.

I agree Fred, but there is (in my mind) western modern music (classical, jazz, rock, blues etc) and music rooted in ethnic (african, celtic, asian etc) cultures.

This is a good thread, Mat, and there is one album I am going to add when I get home.

Perhaps some of you like this music - it ain't my thing, but the sound quality and fidelity is far the best I own and I have around 700+ albums.

I'll update this later.......

Yes, but the two CDs also contain the Hammerklavier, No 29 (Op 106) and No 28 (Op 101) - or did I get that last Opus number wrong?

But, on any basis, one of the great recordings of all time, and I have the three LP set autographed by the great Mauro himself!

The pressings were so good and the production was so good. There was no point in anyone doing a Direct cut of it.

Loads of copies on eBay Stu.

No mention of the engineer on the Ladysmith LP.
I should add:

Spill the beans Stu, I've been over it with a fine tooth comb. Who was it?
