If you could make a music TV programme

I watch Later every week, and every week I fast forward through it in about 5 minutes. James Taylor was good the other week, but that's been about it so far this series. Jools seems to like these student quirky indie bands that all sound the same.

So if you could make a TV music programme for the BBC, what would it be like?

To kick off, I know exactly what I would do.

Take the Top Gear format of a studio with a standing audience and three presenters: Old school, MOR & Young Gun. Say for instance, Dave Grohl, Roger Daltry & Conor Deasy of The Thrills. A mix like that.
You’d get news items on the sofa of tours etc, and items about bands and artists with a tongue-in-cheek presentation, you’d have Allan Jones of Uncut magazine doing a piece on his anecdotes, and you’d get the excursion films – on the road with AC/DC and doing stupid things like a bit of heavy-duty roadie tasks, or form a band using only classified ads in the Telegraph – daft stuff basically. You could have some proper films about the blues greats too like TJ Hooker…I mean John Lee Hooker, interviews with Page & Plant etc. It would be brilliant.

With the emphasis on fun and mucking about, it could be a real winner.

That’s my shout anyway.

I tried to get a producer who I worked with at YTV to see if we could get access to Granada store of tapes from the 'Oxford Road Show', but it just didn't seem commercially viable, and also the music clearance and copyright issues are a mine field.

Pity, I love 70s music.

I am increasingly disappointed with 'Later', the bands I like on it I already know, and generally I find it too safe.

That said, I find all the current crop of so called indie bands to be bland music made to a formula. Not every song has to be verse-chorus x2, middle eight, chorus, end, but hardly any British bands from the last decade have done anything else. Elsewhere may be different, but I am not getting to hear it in England. (I will make an exception for Tool, but I didn't get to hear them through the UK media)

As much as we could do with a new music show, we could do with some new music, where is the next punk, techno, grunge, something which can offer new ideas, or even offend me and make me violently dislike it, that would be better than being bored by it, it would at least trigger some emotion.

Sorry for the little rant, but please .....

One with an alternative history of Rock music.

Some teasers:
- Cliff Richard was a great contributor to the development of Rock.
- The importance of "Horn Rock / Jazz Rock" (Blood Sweat and Tears / early Chicago / If)
- Punk didn't do anything as 90% of the public hated it.
- What would have happened to Guns & Roses if Nirvana hadn't stolen the show?

Malcolm McDowell or Eric Burdon as narators!

No, it's not meant to be particulary serious...

The BBC tried something similar with a food program and that fell flat on it's arse.

I know what you mean though, something like the Mark Radcliffe and Stuart Marconi show mixed with The Word.

If it was set it in the riverside studios at Hammersmith and you could call it "Riverside". Winker

There'd have to be a slot for 'Pan's People' if they're' still up to it.

More like "Gran's People" if you use the originals.

How about a programme that focused on attractive singer/songwriters with floppy hats Smile

Otherwise - I'd like to see the Dame Shirley Collins Show and perhaps a dramatisation of her book America Over The Water.

And - the Half Man Half Biscuit Half Hour - a weekly show from the four lads who shook the Wirral.

I'd wait until HDTV is widespread.
I've always found music TV disappointing,
but maybe the increase in quality HD promises will change that.
