Pressure Washer
Posted by: John Channing on 23 March 2005
I am thinking of buying a pressure washer for washing down the driveway, decking and car. I've seen the Karcher range in B&Q which seem to have a useful range of accessories, are they any good? Would anyone recommend another make?

John,
I've got a Kärcher and it works fine. We only got a cheap one (not the bottom of the range but one or two above) and it's worked brilliantly on our front drive. The paving completely changed colour.
No hesitations in recommending.

John,
I bought a Karcher Pressure Washer about 5 or 6 years ago and have found it to be very useful, especially with the additional accessories, although by the time you have added the additional costs for the extra wands etc. it starts to become a little expensive.Great for cleaning the car,but if you intend cleaning the drive, but if it's a concrete drive, if you purchase one of the 110 bar plus models you may find you are removing the top layer of the drive as well as the crud.
Safety glasses are a must along with good boots etc. Watch any windows/glass doors around as any stones on the ground don't half go when propelled by water at 120lb per sq inch .
Ohhhh one last thing ,they don't tell you in the adverts, be prepard when you start to use it for visits from all the neigbourhood dropping broad hints about their Drives/Cars etc
oldie.

One thing worth remembering is the fact that when jet washing a drive, take care to aim the water away from cars and also white buildings, if your house is painted white and you jetwash your drive towards the house, you will spray the house with brown gunge up to first floor level!!
(Yes.... I did this once)

We got a Karcher one a while ago, the extra attachments are useful (especially the rotating car wash brush).
Don't forget to get the Sarah Brightman CDs for post pressure washing relaxing session!

Idont know if you have one of their branches close to you but Machine Mart do a quite extensive range of power-washers and accessories here
I recently bought a Clarke Jump-start battery pack from them and it was excellent VFM.

When I wasn't using my old one (karcher) to remove stains etc on my anti-fouling and boot-top, it easily converted into a handy vacuum cleaner to suck the biscuit crumbs from my Persian carpets, innit.
Fritz Von Steamin too

I would most certainly recommend Karcher.
They are the largest washing company and they supply to many Government departments and they have a very good after sales service based at Banbury.
I have a 650 cleaner and it is probably a bit to powerfull for domestic use, so don't overdo it.
It is good for cleaning drives, the car and what I find it most useful for, is cleaning the outdoor teak garden furniture.
It only takes 45 minutes and I have a large table and 8 chairs looking like new.
Stick with Karcher.
Regards

About pressure cleaners.
I realise your climate is different to ours, however we generally use these machines to remove mould from roofs, driveways and the like. They do a magic job but the mould grows back even more quickly. Solution ,apply pool chlorine which kills the spores ,otherwise your hard work is a waste of time.

I got one last year and its my favorite toy, have just spent the afternoon cleaning the patio - mine was a 550m. (it cost £162 from 24/7) which is probably less powerful than the 650 but it came with a dirt blaster which is great for patios, (and also car wheels) - but be careful because it removes the mortar, and could probably remove your fillings - these attachments cost £39 seperately.
I have never used any liquids with it and as Mick says the standard attachment is great for garden furniture (and cars too).

I still prefer the "three bucket" system for washing my car.
I have seen pressure washers strip paint from a bumper and they can damage tyres.
Great for cleaning driveways and paths though.......... mine's also a Karcher.
Once your monoblock is dry again you should sweep very fine sand over it to refill the joints.
