Controlling a headless Mac Mini

Posted by: busaganashi on 07 February 2009

I found a program called Chicken of the VNC that allows me to log into my Mac mini with my Macbook Air and run itunes, change settings, etc. It's free to download. I was using my iphone as the remote, but it's nice to see what the mini is doing. Anyway, I thought some of the mini users might be interested.

You could also, providing your Mac's are running 10.5, use the built in Screen Sharing application built into the OS. It's basically the same thing. Just turn the screen sharing option on in preferences on both Macs, open a finder window on your laptop, select the mini in the list of networked items on the left pane, hit the share screen button (input user name and pass if needed) and up pops a window showing you the desktop of the Mini, which you can run the cursor over and control to your heart's content... Smile I use it a lot across the numerous Macs in my office and around the apartment, if I want to have a quick peek what one of them is up to or start an action on one of them, and so on....

Just as Steve says. Screen sharing really is very straightforward and quick to set up. I tried doing the same on XP at work. I gave up.

I use Chicken of the VNC on my Powermac G5 to control the mini in the hi-fi rack if i need to do anything other than general maintenance. Otherwise i just use VNC on the iTouch.
