D40/D60?

After draining you all for information earlier in the year and not buying a DSLR I'm in a position to be able to purchase. Here we go again, apologies to all who responded last time.
There are a couple of packages

There is virtually nothing to differentiate in price - whcih is the better camera, or is it not that simple?

Have you had the D60 in your hands? Did it feel ok? Did you compare it to how any of the opposition handled? That's all that really matters, as the images will be pretty much the same as those from any other dslr.
Apologies for not being bothered to re-read the original thread!

Hi Diccus,
I'm on the same page, looking at Nikon D40, D40x, or D60.
Here's one opinion: KenRockwell
He prefers the original D40 to either of its successors, and he makes a convincing argument. Plus, it's the cheapest of the three, currently as low as $375US for the body with the 18-55mm lens.
All best,
Fred

Definitely stick to D40. It's a terrific camera. I had a D200 until it was stolen in June, have had the D40 since. It really does everything that I needed the D200 to do and the added advantage of being really compact and light. The lens it comes with is fantastic, I sat down and compared it with a friends extensive collection of vintage lenses and it kept up with all of them in this range. I think spending any more is folly, shells are out of date every 12-18 months anyway. The only other camera I might be tempted by now is the D90 if you want to spend the money, you really don't need to.
In fact the ONLY thing I missed on the D40 when I got it was an ISO button, then I discovered you could map the Fn button on the left of the camera to anything you want, including ISO. Fn must stand for Fn brilliant.

Read Rockwell, asked friends, and checked other sources. Putting my money on a D-40 this week. Its a digital SLR bargain.

Have you handled one? Far too small for my Pat Jennings hands!
Tony
PS. Oops, just noticed the CA,USA sig! He was a 'soccer' goalkeeper with hands like rather large things.

I got your drift. I have handled the D-40 and it is smaller than my F-100 but works fine for my substantially sub Pat Jennings hands.
Thanks

Nice one - enjoy and post some shots.
I am admittedly biased, but I think the Nikons "handle" better at each price-point. They just seem more solid and less "plastic" than the Canons. The penalties are perhaps that the lenses cost a bit more than comparable Canons and they are typically fewer megapixels (which hardly matters).

Yes, I have a D40 first generation with the standard lens + 18-55mm, and I love it to bits. Every time I use it, and I still do a lot (it isn't a 4 week wonder, then gets put away), I keep thinking how it is one of the best things I ever bought.

She? So, Delia the D40!
Well done for taking the plunge, and here's to your photography improving even more than mine has over the last 4 years.

She hasn't got a name yet. The kids love objects having names. Both the cars have names - sort of brings them to life

Picked mine up over the noon hour yesterday and spent a bit of time yesterday evening charging the battery and going through the setup menu. Took a couple of quick shots and everything looks and works just great. After playing around with the setup menu and reading the various setup and shooting options in the manual, I am more convinced than ever that buying the D-40 was the way to go. The camera comes with a great lens and after mastering all the menus and having some fun, I can decide if I really need anything more. The camera is very light weight for an SLR and the fit and finish seemed just fine and comparable to the brand new D 90. Weather permitting, I'm taking a motorcycle ride up to the mountains tomorrow and will take it along for its first real test.
Diccus, hope you're enjoying yours as well.

Diccus, now you only need the new Nikon 50/1.4G AF-S for lowlight photography, I've ordered mine 2 weeks ago.
Check-up auto-ISO which is a very nice feature...
