Which upgrade??

Posted by: Charlezz on 27 August 2003

Hi guys,
I am considering a new upgrading for my system:
CDX/Nac52/Supercap/Nap180/Nautilus 803
The possibilities:
-XPS2?
-Olive style's 135
-New 250
...

What do you think about it??
Thank you.
Charles

Rem: In a far future, I would like to buy bigger BW Nautilus (802 or 800's)

I've got CDX/82+2xHi/250/Kans.
I believe my next upgrade is an XPS, no-brainer.

Salut Charlezz

I think that the 180 will not allow your 52 to shine as it should. This should be sorted out I believe, either a 250 or 135s. The latter can be had second hand

With 52 XPS2 is a must. 180 is crying for replacement, too. New 250 is better and more powerful than 135s. You need it now, you will need it more, if go for bigger B&W.

It has to be an XPS2 first! Audition one and see what your missing,

The Nautilus range isn't as easy to drive as one would think. The 803 dips to 3 ohms and is quite a reactive load so I think I would go for the extra power. Realistically, you're looking at the new 250 or old 135s. An olive 250 would help but not as much as one would like. I know this would be creating a mullet system but I think this is the best way forward.

that said, if you get the chance to hear the two options (XPS vs power amp), then grab it and listen!

Frank.

If you don't have a good rack, that would be a bigger upgrade than any of the above.

Charles,

Apart from moving up to a nac52,moving up to the 250 from my 180 was the best upgrade i think ive ever made.
With your system i'd definately replace the amp/s first, then sweeten it up later with an XPS2.

Cheers,
Mark

Actually, JRHardee makes a good point. If you're still running with a basic rack then you'd be well advised to improve that. You know the big names - Naim Fraim, Hutter, Mana, Quadraspire Ref, Isoblue.

Thank you all.
"A new Nap250 is more powerfull than Nap135's" Confused
Is that true??????
Would a new Nap250 be enough for a pair of Nautilus 800's??
Does anyone disagree new Nap250 is better tan Nap135's??

Thanks

Certain parts of my system are identical to yours.
Your 180 is not getting the best from your N803's. I began running my N803's with an olive 250 and then progressed up to olive 135's. These have much more grip.I do not believe 180's are powerful enough to get the best from your N803's which as has been stated previously are a demanding load.

I cannot comment on the new naim range, but it seams generally accepted that all components accross the board are better and more powerful than their olive predessors.

If your ultimate goal is N800's or N802's I do not think 135's or 250 of any vintage are really suitable - these speakers are really deserving of nap500 to be driven at their best.

How big is your listening room if you need N802's or N800's ?

Emil--If racks don't matter, why did you pay all that money for a Fraim? Perhaps you don't realize just how much WORSE that great system of yours would sound if it were set up on bookshelves or in a typical "entertainment center". Wink

Thank you.
I am waiting for more comments concerning the new Naim range.
But anyway, I will never spend 2000£ for a rack even as good as it may be.... It is surely a consciousness matter....
My room is today 35M2 but will be at leat 50m2 when I will be looking at 802 or 800's.
Would a new Nap250 be enough for 803's?
Would it be better than Nap135's?

Hi there Charlezz,

I've got a 180 driving NBLs, my next move will be 135's...then more 135's followed by more 135's. Active is where I want to go. Having said this this the 180 isn't doing a bad job but then again I havent actually heard Nbls driven with anything else for a comparison!

As for the new style stuff I,m not going there so...hopefully someone else can guide you....

Cheers Smile

Salut Charles,
put things in perpective, you are going in the £10K+ system level now, £2K for a stand represents only £20% of the total price.

I'm very happy with my Fraim (got it in january this year). I think it's a very worthwhile £2k spent.

Cheers
