Headphones

Looking for advise regarding going down the headphone path. Is it worthwhile? Is the Naim Headline any good? are there different options? Can I run one off my 52/Supercap or will I need a seperate power supply? I have heard that the head phones offer the best musical experience. Is this true or is it only subjective. What products are worth considering and how high in this path should I consider taking into consideration my current system which I am in love with. XX2/P9/Prefix/52Super/135's/SBL's. What products work best with a Naim system?

Thanks

I've got a Headline, and it's fine. It does need an external power supply other than your 52/Super. (I use a SNAPS, which is better than the minimum-recommended NAPSC, but not as good as a Hi-Cap or Super-Cap, which is probably overkill.) I'm using both AKG K240DF and Sennheiser HD330. (The AKGs are better.)

As to whether headphones are preferable over speakers, I would say no. You certainly get a plethora of additional details, nuances, etc., but you loose the physical impact of the music. Also, I like the music to come from in front of me, not from the middle of my head. Finally, you can't use headphones with your friends.

That being said, if you don't have a "separate" listening space, and your significant other (or neighbors) are complaining about the noise, then headphones might give you a semblance of freedom (or at least versatility).

In my case, though, my Headline/SNAPS is on my secondary system, and is only used while recording vocals in my studio. It's a more a lifestyle choice than anything else.

Thanks all, with the need of a seperate powersupply I think I will need to do some serious demos first. It sounds interesting but I am not sure I would use them unless the experience was exceptional.

Consider the Rega Ear at around £100. It sounds pretty damn good for the price and is a small outlay if you only need this as a 'back-up' when the speakers can't be used.
