LP12 Plinth Changing Maple/Piano Black
Posted by: Peter Holmes on 15 August 2002
Since I have to get my non-performing LP12 turntable checked out I thought I might change the existing walnut plinth to either Maple or Piano Black (like the 25th Anniversary version).
Just wondered if any forum members had had bad experiences with plinth changes as I don't want to make the patient worse!
Don't suppose there are any owners of a 25th Anniversary LP12 in piano black who want to sell?

Had a free plinth change as after a 3 years the varnish was comming off. This was years ago and Jay of RPM did the setup, even after 7 years every dealer who has done a service has said very little had to be done and one even knew Jay had done it. Was very sad when RPM closed and even sadder I've lost his phone number.

I think you might struggle to get piano black as I think this was a limited edition. Phone linn directly is your best bet.

Have you seen the Maple finish in the flesh? This finish would seem to make the deck look a lot more contemporary and costs about £225 from Linn. The Black piano I am informed would be approx. £740 and there would be a six month wait!

I recently had my 1986 LP12 with (then) very fashionable black ash plinth serviced and a new Arkiv/lid fitted. I took the opportunity to get a maple plinth too. I think it was around £220-250 , fitted from the dealer. No problems at all and it looks great!

A friend of mine had his Epos ES11's black laquered a few years ago by a French polishing bloke. It didn't cost to much, and it was applied directly over the black ash veneer.
Judging by the number of refinished grand pianos there are in our local music shop, it may be worth going this route instead of the £700+ route!
Mickey.

Energy, from whom did you buy your maple plinth in Australia? How many Aussie dollars did it cost? Would love to aim for a maple LP12, Fraim, and Allaes once funds become available. Mario.

Mario,
Well not sure of the cost yet as I have not got the invoice. I think $800 AUD
My understanding is that Len Wallis Audio & Audio Connection are to be one of three new Linn dealers in Sydney. There are is now no Linn/Naim dealers (so now one store for your naim & then off to the Linn dealer)
Audio Products Australia are now the Australian Linn distributor.
Cheers

Lee,
I had the maple plinth/service/Arkiv done at Martin Kleiser in Old Beaconsfield (not too far from Maidenhead!) Colin there seems hot on LP12's. The Sound Gallery in High Wycombe is another option.

I too have made the conversion from black to maple. In my case after flood damage. I think it looks rather spiffing!
I suppose some system pics should follow....

I remember RPM - they were on the corner of Webbs Road and Burland Road. Jay and Karen were always superbly helpful. I bough a Nak CD4 player off them, as well as various interconnects, and Jay serviced my (afro!) LP12 in 1991. A much missed shop...

I agree with Neil. I have just got my LP12 back from Martin Kleisers tender care; it sounds fantastic. Colin Macey seems to know everything about the Sondek and is a real enthusiast. They are on 01494 681300

looks great. How much did it cost? And does this include the top plate or not.I'm thinking of getting a new plinth and I may replace the top plate too as the new one has an extra bolt on that fixes to the plinth.
