iTunes/MAC/NAS troubles.

Posted by: tonym on 21 March 2009

Having recently moved to an iMac from my now deceased PC, I was looking forward to the ease of use promised by most folks, the freedom from constant pop-ups, a smoother experience.

In many ways the Mac is excellent, but I'm rather dismayed by how incredibly difficult it appears to be when trying to get it to work with my NAS.

Previously we had two PCs and a Qnap NAS networked via cat 6 cable, the iTunes music file held on the NAS. No problems, you could access the music from either PC.

The Mac, however, just doesn't want to recognise the NAS. Every time I switch it on I then have to reconnect the NAS, get logged on as a guest, have to log on as administrator, and then iTunes decides to mark most of the songs with an exclamation mark, saying it can't find the files. Heaven only knows what's going on. I hasten to add that the NAS is set up to allow free access, is iTunes compatible, and has no other barriers to restrict access.

By a process of trial and error I eventually get things to work, but if I shut the computer down & reboot I'm then back to square one.

Another problem, perhaps linked to the iTunes issue, is that Time Machine, the Mac backup program, didn't recognise the NAS as a valid backup location. Why not for heavens sake?! Red Face

I've searched the internet for some sort of solution and ended up messing about with Unix coding, and although I've managed to get Time Machine to "see" a backup location on the NAS, it just won't backup to it.

It just shouldn't be like this!! As you may gather, I find all this very vexatious to my spirit and I'm severely peed off.

Any help would be very appreciated...

Had similar problems with LaCie - but not with D-Link or NETGEAR NAS boxes.

Hi tony.

When you got your nas box you probably had a software install disk which would ensure the nas automatically mounted in Windows, and no doubt Lacie will not have produced such software for the mac.

So what you need is something that will ensure when you turn your mac on it automatically mounts the NAS box onto the mac ready for itunes to use.

Something like this might be the way forward http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/29844/bonjour-mounter

I have no idea if it works. I plumbed for a Drobo share for a nas, the company thankfully fully supported macs from the outset so their software enables the nas to mount automatically.

FWIW the mac should just mount network shares automatically, but in my experience it just don't and I am not sure why!

Hi Tony - when you have mounted your NAS manually go to System Preferences on your Mac and add a log-in item for the disk ... it's under Accounts in Systems Preferences and you'll see Login Items near the top of the screen. Select that, hit the + and select the NAS drive on the left of the screen and click ADD.

Then when you log on to your account next time, it'll mount the NAS. Then start iTunes and voila all should be well. At least this works for me with a couple of Lacie NAS drives on the network.

Coo! Is it really that simple David?

Can't switch the computer off to try just yet but I've done what you suggested. Here's hoping...

Thanks too gary. The Qnap is designed to work with the Mac, and it seems to be OK for my photo files, it's just the iTunes it seems to dislike.

They don't seem to put a time out on the itunes, if it can't find the folder it immediately throws a flid

Well, that worked a treat David - many thanks! Why oh why have I been messing about with all this other stuff, when this was so simple.

Happy bunny now... Smile
