Help - DMS Bariks as bookshelf speakers?!?

Posted by: Simon Anthony on 05 November 2002

I have a problem. My wife wants to get a carpenter in to create a wall unit for a whole wall of our living room. This is intended to house a TV, my various Naim boxes, books, and my old Linn DMS isobariks.

While I love the idea of protecting the speakers from my 1.5 year old, I am apprehensive about the acoustic effect of boxing them in.

Does anyone have any experience of the effect this sort of set up, or have any suggestions or recommendations?

Thanks,
Simon

Sikora's, a record shop in Vancouver have Isobariks wall mounted about 6 feet of the ground to play music in the shop.

Bizarre but true

I think the upward facing drive units are an intrinsic part of the Isobarik. Boxing them in would be a shame.

I think Linn do some speakers intended to be built into walls and stuff. They might be worth considering.

The 'bariks will sound utterly dreadful if boxed in. A while back, when we were decorating some rooms, I needed to place mine under a book shelf for a couple of weeks and the effect was very odd indeed and certainly not pleasant.

I wouldn't do it - it won't be easily reversible.
