Kan stands
Posted by: Mekon on 18 December 2002
I have my Kans on Kan II stands. However, looking at the picture on Tony Lonorgan's site, and from reading his review, I see mine are slightly different. My Kans have little rubbery feet, and the stands do not have spikes on the top. Instead there are allen bolts. I understand these are removeable, along with the rubber feet, and that spikes can be installed. If so, any ideas where these spikes are available? I've tried Linn's customer service dept, and they say that these spikes are long since out of stock. FWIW, the CSA's opinion was that I shouldn't worry about it, as the difference would be marginal.

Sorry, don't know where to find the top spikes.
My Kan's sit on the spikes on top of Kan II stands. They are short sharp little buggers, as witnessed by my poor speakers bottoms.
IMHO, Kan's don't do their thing unless level, very tight ( stands ) and rigid on spikes both top and bottom. I have tried blu-tack instead of spikes for an experiment, didn't work for me.
If all else fails, a machine shop could whip up something for you....

michael

Top and bottom spikes would be well worth the effort. Mind you, getting them set up right can be a pain. There must be no rocking. Heavy speakers such as Isobariks tend to stay in position once set up right. Kans are hampered by there light weight, especially if the spikes have to pierce through thick carpet.
Try Linn (or ex-Linn) dealers, I'm sure some of them will have some spares knocking around.

I spent about four hours a few weekends back getting all my stands level and absolutely stable. Much cursing was involved.
Cheers for the tip, I'll ring around some shops.

That's b******s!
I can give you the dimensions of mine, they are quite a complex shape, a bit like a large-headed bolt, with a countersunk bottom half, and a very sharp pointy spike on top.
If you know anyone with mechanical engineering facilities, I'm sure some could be fabricated.
Hey - if there's sufficient demand I'm sure I could get some fab'ed
Another way could be to find a standard spike that would fit the thread, and just have a conical locknut turned from a standard full nut.
The speakers would stand a little higher, unless a conical 45 degree spike profile could be obtained - I wonder if the old Mana top spikes would fit?
They could be available FOC from owners who've changes to the sharp and spiky ones, but I think they are a larger thread, from memory.

That could be very useful. I think I could persuade someone in the engineering dept to have a go, if I can't lay my hands on some.
Thanks
Ian.

If I can dig them out tonight, I'll post a drawing for you (I'm not using mine at present).
In fact, if you promise to return it, I can send you one in the post to copy, post-Xmas.
Andy.

quote:That makes no sense, as you can purchase new Kan II stands from Linn right now; at least I was able to about a year and a half ago. Have Linn discontinued the stand?
