Fantasy Garage

Posted by: Brian OReilly on 07 November 2002

This is for NAIMGAME 'cos I know he's bored.

OK. Assuming you have a BMW 530d Touring parked outside for daily use, what vehicles would be in your Fantasy Garage ?

Pick five. Cars, motorbikes, anything with wheels, old or new, cost no object, you choose.

Think about it in bed tonight, and post tomorrow.

BTW if you're reading this Mick, Fantasy Garage does not mean Miss Whiplash and a rubber Postman Uniform.

Think overnight? Like it's not running through my head continuously.

1. A Caterham R500, subjected to the full Dave Andrews treatment.

2. Porsche 911RS

3. Lamborghini Miura SV

4. Ferrari 288GTO

5. Bentley Arnage Red Label

(please may I have an extension to the Garage for my F40, Daytona, Lotus Elan, Ultima GTR, and Radical SR3 Supersport?)

Tough one but here goes:

1. Jaguar E-Type 4.2 Coupe series 1.5 (closed headlamps still) in Red please.

2. Alfa Romeo SZ. Only comes in Red, oh well.

3. Porsche 993 Carrera 2S in Polar Silver.

4. Aston Martin DB5. So I can eject nasty people out of the passenger seat ;-) Dark silver, what else.

5. Volvo P1800S in white.

Plus like Mekon, I'd also like to store/use these as well: a 944 Turbo/968 sport in Black (coz they're still bloody good sports cars even by todays standards), an original Audi Quattro (Big Q version), that new Lambo in dark purple and my old MGB GT restored with a nice horny V8 shoe horned under the bonnet. (ULB203M where are you these days??)

Blood transfusion? Pah, fill me up with the best unleaded you got!

<<2. Porsche 911RS>>

Surely some mistake, shouldn't this be at No.1..?

I really miss mine (1972 911S converted to RS) but marriage ended the affair - my wife HATED it! Amazing we actually got married really...

Strange, I still have a small photo of her (the 911) somewhere in my wallet and whistfully pull it out in moments of regret....

Ok, here's my attempt. Already seeing quite a lot of crossover in the posts so far.

Jaguar E-Type Coupe - Series 1 or 1 1/2. Must have the headlamp covers. I really fall for cars with this type of headlamp. Colour: Gunmetal. Wheels: Wire (not chromed).

Aston DB6 Saloon - Not DB4,not Zagato. I think this car and the E-Type epitomise British sports car design of the period.

Ferrari 275 GTB Longnose ? - Not sure I have the name correct. This is the really curvaceous model with the faired in headlamps (see above). I think this was the Golden Era for Ferrari and ( I assume Pinninfarina). The cars looked fantastic, the engines were a work of art.

Porsche 911RS - 993 if you don't mind. Has to be in there somewhere. Enduring classic. Perfect engine, odd location. I would probably be happy with any 911 really.

Mclaren F1 - Road Spec. Colour ? Unpainted Carbonfibre ? Not a very imaginative pick but what a piece of engineering. I've read the book detailing the design and development of this car and it really is inspirational. I going to admit now, that when I'm designing something I ask myself if it would be Mclaren F1 standard. The answer is usually No, but it's a good target. Even the suspension on this car looks like a sculpture.

The moral dilemma of spending that much money on a car is difficult, but there is something about this car that trancends its cost.

OK. That's five so no room for a Bimota, a Citroen DS, AC Ace, Bentley Continental, Isetta, Fiat 500 etc.But I think I would be happy.

My garage currently contains a Caterham SV which I am half way through building. Everything is fine and dandy but my personal fantasy is getting the bloody thing to start. Immobilisers/fuel cut off switches/ECUs aaaah!

My five are:

1. 1969 Dodge Coronet Superbee because it's badass

2. 1967 Ford GT500 because it's beautiful

3. 2003 Toyota Tundra Stepside for hauling Neat Ultimatums

4. 1969 Cadillac Eldorado Conv. to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine

5. 2003 Subaru WRX for the snow

That new Bentley GT is lovely, but me driving around in that would be like taking a ham sandwich to a banquet.

1) Ferrari 246 Dino Berlinetta without Daytona Styling kit (Simply the best looking car ever built

2)AC Cobra 427 - 196 mph on the M1 in 1964 - flame from the exhaust when you lift off - wheelspin at 100 mph - cant go round corners (the second best looking car ever)

3) Bristol Blenheim for when you need to get across europe, unoticed and in style (how can a car this ugly be so beautiful)

4)Facel Vega Excellence, for when you are going to a do but you know somone else also has a Blenheim (dont go around a corner to fast or the doors will fly open)

It's a poor learners bike as it has limited steering lock and the clutch is very heavy. Very, very cute though...

I know, that's why I'd never get one in real life - but this is fantasy big grin

It's also the noise - that desmo V-twin just sounds superb. Also, I like that the engine and other "guts" are visible, I'm not so keen on the bikes with all the composite body work (I know it's there for a reason, but looks-wise, I prefer to see the heart of the machine).

It's undoubtedly a thug of bike!

Indeed he is. I even quite like his choice of bikes although I can't help thinking that number 4 might perform better if it had wheels and stuff!

I can't help thinking that a public transport system which you keep in your garage won't be much good for anything though.

I think he was going by Mr. Prescott's definition of a public transport system - e.g. the government would give us two Jags and a driver each...

So Roy's garage looks like:

1) A car
2) VBH

You've still got 3 spaces left to fill. wink

Or perhaps you need the room...

5) NCC-1701 E

I've purposely discounted NCC-1701 B because it's vulgar and ugly.

Steve G,

I'm not sure why its "lefty, pinko" to want good buses. Does this mean destroying the planet with petrol guzzling sports cars designed to compensate for fragile male egos is an exlucsively right wing thing?

The de Kerf is so gorgeous that its best appreciated through a picture of just the frame. To build it into a complete bike, I would continue the Canadian theme and go with Synchros, Race Face, etc.
