PC Sound

Posted by: Harris V on 11 March 2005

I'm getting really hacked off with my PC sound system. Music is unlistenable and even sound effects on games are a bit like a strangled dog. I have the free Creative speakers/sub that came with the system.

Can anyone recommend a 5.1 PC system that sounds OK, or should I start looking for some second hand hi fi? Problem is I don't want to spend for than a couple hundred quid.

I've got the Creative Labs Gigaworks S750 and it's extremely good for a pc system. It plays music very sweet and powerful. I can't remember the price, but it was over £200.

I think you'll be disappointed with cheapish units as they'll all be tinny sounding crap. Before the S750, I had bought two different systems at about £110 and £180. I took both back instantly for a refund because they sounded awful.

If you decided to listen to music from a PC leave your hopes!
Anyway i think that with few pounds you can get a Creative 5.1 points sound card that is a little better than the sound chipset normally mounted on mother boards!
Even Terratec is good card, but forget about the quality that a good stereo set can give you.
Do not use your stereo to amplify the PC sound.
Those frequencies, expecially in games, are quite bad for normal use amplifiers and speakers.
Try to get, if you want a T-Amp by Sonic Impact Thecnologies.
It's a class T amplifier that seems good for use on PC and the cost is between 23 and 30 $.

Good luck

Thanks guys. I guess that I may need to get a sound card as well (source first??) if I do go for some better speakers.
