Prefab Sprout

Posted by: cafez27 on 17 April 2007

Evening

For those of you who remember the early eighties and listening late night to what wold today be indie bands you'd hear on John Peel here is one for you....

Prefab Sprout along with Thomas Dolby have just re-released that seminal work 'Steve McQueen'. Obviously it has been remastered, rather well, by Mr Dolby but the real jewel in the CD crown is a second disk with acoustic versions by Paddy Macloon.

Re-recorded in 2006 by Paddy himself the tracks are spellbinding, Appetite, Bonny, When Love Breaks Down, soulful meaningful lyrics sung with a heart that screams personal experience that will draw you into the music like never before.

If you liked Prefab Sprout then and you have the 'Steve McQueen' album go and by the new version tomorrow, spin it sit back and remember those late teenage nights when music ruled our world and shaped out thinking, marvellous......

Honestly its the best thing I've heard since I bought Trouble by Ray Lamontagne er yesterday. Be interested in your opinion, I think its genius?

Big thanks for the heads-up on this.

'Bonny' is a song that transports me to my student days in a flash. Wonderful.

BTW is it only me that rather enjoys the 'The Gunman and Other Stories...'. It seemed to be one those albums that sank without a trace at the time.

Hi Bruce

'The Gunman and Other Stories' is a masterpiece in my opinion, and ah those student days, Appetite and When Love Breaks Down takes me back to boarding school days, when my best friend was my record player!!!

Another thanks for the heads up on this.I still listen to them quite a lot, & always admired mr Dolby.
there is a part of me that prefers "Swoon" to Steve Mqueen, but, then again.................

I've had this for a couple of weeks now. I have the original too and there is definitely an added spark to the new remaster. As has been mentioned the acoustic CD is worth the money alone!! (And Bonny has to be the best song ever written!!)

Thanks for this....Had both albums in the laties and saw them live then too - before they went more mainstream - Albaquerque never had the same edge IMHO.

Thomas Dolby used to be the sound man for The Members.

Thanks for the tip - it's a great album but not my favourite by the band which would have to be either Protest Songs or Jordan with Jenny Agutter whispering "I want to have you" on the track Wild Horses.Excellent in so many ways.

Thanks again

THAT IS JENNY AGUTTER?!?!?

It certainly is - now just read the sleevenotes , play the track and the take a cold shower.

'Alternative' Mike Lacey alert!

Phew. Glad to know I am not alone in getting all wobbly with the Jenny Agutter bit!

'Cruel' off the first one deserves a mention. 'I trawl the megahertz' is almost heartbreaking in places as well. Paddy should be much more recognised as the songwriting genious he so clearly is.

Thanks for the tip off. HMV today!

'Steve McQueen' is definitely in my top 10 and the new acoustic versions are excellent. However the last 'chord' is missing from the end of the remastered copy (if you have the original play the last minute of 'When the Angels' and listen at the end when you think it has finished)."Due to the exception length of this record play LOUD".

If you like Thomas Dolby you must get a copy of 'The Sole Inhabitant' as the songs and production are excellent. He is currently working on new material. Do you know more Tam?

Thanks Glenda,

Went to see them on the 'Jordan' Tour, so my happy memories of that will have to suffice. A very underrated band IMO.

Should really thank Prefab or Paddy. My first wife bought me a copy of When Love Breaks Down. I should have realised what she was trying to tell me.

thanks for the tip Jez - unfortunately no longer in my teens when it came out or still listening to John Peel but still remembered it and picked it up about 8 years ago. Is probably my only 80's pop record. Bought the reissue today and awaiting the postman.

Jez

Had mine a week and the acoustic disc is sublime in places-the lyrics really hit home too. The remasters are fresh as a daisy too. Thanks again

J.N. put me onto this; got my copy and it's great!

My fav. "Sprout" is still "Jordan" by a whisper but the acoustic stuff's something else!

I tracked down a copy of the remastered Steve McQueen in HMV, 16 quid, over the top, but worth it. Not sure about the accoustic disk, but I do like the full house version. You re-gain some faith in humanity when an album like that can can be so genuinely popular.
