Headline on Supercap together with 252?

Posted by: Stenberg on 09 January 2010

Might be a stupid question - BUT have to ask here...
Say's on the Headline manual:
Note: To avoid ground loop problems, a Supercap used to power a Headline should not simultaneously power any other item.
Meaning that the Supercap CAN power both the 252 and the Headline - or?
Have any of you tried this? Now the Headline is on a NAPSC - and it works, but one is curious

I've never tried otherwise, but officially the SC is designed to power one device only.

Possible yes - good idea no - supported no

Peter! Shame on you! tsk tsk...

Is that what happens when I'm not around to keep you on the straight and narrow path...?

Otherwise, I second what ROTF said, above.

Btw, I wish you and Ole a very happy new year!

The Supercap got many power outputs that remains functionnal even when one one them is used. It could be a good idea to install a disabling device for the 2 "Hicap" sockets on the next generation of Supercap (like a Burndy cap on the Burndy plug to allow the "Hicap" sockets to be functionnal, and that cut off the power on them when you're removing the Burndy cap to power up a NAC 252 with it).

If you're powering the Headline (or about every other Hicap compatible device) when you're already powering up a NAC 252 (or 52) with the Supercap, you're offering an alternate way to the earth ground to reach the Supercap from the preamp, ruining the star earth principle and exposing the connected components to non-negligeable sources of polluting noise.

Moreover, you'll be stressing considerably two of the 7 boards inside the Supercap, asking much more power than what their design's "comfort zone" is. Nothing will blow up, but we all know how bad stressed up components sounds like...

And on top of that, I know that Naim classifies the Headline like an "accessory" into their products listing, but IMO it should be considered by all means for what it is: An amplifier, and should be treated accordingly.

Bye.

He he - so this is what it takes to get you up and replying - I should have known!
I just got curious - and after I tried the Headline on a pair of Sennheiser HD650's ( one of 2 very good christmas's gifts - the other was a DAC) - I think I was looking for more performance - Steve had advised me that the NAPSC would do the job for the Headline, but...and with the Supercap just sitting there - not doing much while using the HD 650's on the Headline, well you know...
Anyway - thanks for all the reply's, and thanks to Stoik for putting "it" on writing so even a stupid "speakerpuscher" from Denmark can understand.

Can't the headline be powered off the 252, much like a Superline or Prefix?
Posted on: 09 January 2010 by aht
Chris,

No, that won't work, the Headline needs its own PS.

In theory, yes. In practice, no.

The NAC 252's AUX2 power outlet is perfectly capable of powering up a Headline, because the power rails it's using is dedicated and not shared with any other components inside the NAC 252 (same with NAC 552).

Don't even think about that with any other Naim preamps. The Headline will exceed their supply possibilities (intended for nothing else but a Naim phono stage) and compromise seriously the preamp's performances, because the power supply is shared with other components inside the preamp. So this is probably why Naim decided to make the Headline not compatible with the AUX2 as a power source.

Bye.
