Matching an appropriate Cd player with 72/140
Posted by: Kevin Loo on 05 March 2003
I am currently using 72/140. Have been trying high and low to look for a CD3.5 but still cannot find. How about matching it with CD1? Any comments? Thanks

Any Naim CD from CDI, CD2, CDX upwards.
The 3.5 is a good match but the 72/140 is good enough the handle better CD's in the range.
Lower down the scale try Arcam players.

Kevin,
What CD player are you trying to upgrade from?
The 72/140 would also benefit alot with an addition of a HiCap. For around £700-750 s/h the CDI is excellent value IMO. Make sure they are in top condition though!
Good Luck

Well, I am using a Sony DVD player at the moment. Wanting to have a pure CD player. Cannot get any CD players in Malaysia so I have to ask my friend to get one for me from UK. I hope I can get hold of one soon...btw, CDI is about 9 years old isn't it? How come it is more costly than a 3.5?

Kevin,
The CDi (i for intergrated) was a one box version of the original CDS. It has the same chip set and Transport but the suspension is simpler. Also the power supply is not in a different box and is more in Hi-cap legue than a CDPS.
This makes it a mid market machine i.e in the same slot as a CDX hence the price. Not to mention that its considered better than a 3.5 + Hi-Cap.

Kevin,
Sorry I didn't get back to you earlier; not been around. UK prices for the CDI are :-
Good condition - some Wear to Transport £600 - £650
V Good + all paperwork box etc - no scuffs on Transport (Nextel ring) £700+
Mint & Serviced £800 - £900.
I picked mine up from a dealer for under £600, it has some wear to the Nextel but works fine. I think I got a good deal as the misreads stopped after I got a new puck and got it levelled.
Personally I would not buy a CDI unless it was guaranteed or I could see it working and judge the level of wear on the Nextel ring. This is a coating on the hub where the CD is placed and held by the puck.
Whilst you are ordering get the dealer to get a new puck for you this will reduce the wear on the Nextel. If the Nextel wears off then it’s a trip back to Naim and a £500 bill.
I would also recommend getting a (or more ) dedicated spur(s) for your system – the CD players really benefit from the better supply.
