How would you define Cinematic Orchestras, Man with a movie camera?

I don't know, but I am guessing jazz orientated?

Anyhoo, I purchased from the wonders of ebay a simply fantastic album by a group called I believe '9 lazy 9' called Sweet jones.

This album is very similar in style to CO, and I am guessing again in a jazz vein.

Lets be clear here, this is not your kind of Jazz that I refer to as 'porn jazz' such as different kind of blue, which IMO is a bunch of blokes masterbating with instruments. This album is understated, well recorded with some lovely 'jazz?' music. Its on the ninja label BTW.

And supposing that I like most of what Zappa did, espcially Waka Jawaka, Grand Wazoo etc I am to thinking that mabye I like jazz.

I need to gather evidence for this supposition, therefore can anyone recommend jazz in the style of cinematic orchestra, or zappa (I appriciate the two are quite different)

Preferably stuff you can actually obtain on ebay or what ever.

cheers folks.

BTW if its not jazz tell me what it is, I would rather not be associated with it to be honest Wink

What is this strange masturbatory album that you speak of? Stop living in denial and buy some Ellington.

Gary

Woodface is right.

Blues in Orbit by Duke Ellington is probably the bst record ever made by anyone ever.

Failing that, try The Far East Suite.

Mmmm... Nice!

I think you mis-understand. I have different kind of blue and I think its crap.

I don't like jazz where they are all farting away in musical arguments.

I am hoping for some recommendations for similar veins to CO.

Cheers

Perhaps when you get a decent system you'll come to understand 'KoB' a bit better...

Try some Ellington or Basie classic Big Band stuff, you quite often find really cheap unknown session stuff by Ellington, the three or four I have are all good.

If you see James Booker's 'Classified' buy it, it probably qualifies as jazz. Also any old Mose Allison. 'Seventh Son' especially. Piano/Drums/Bass with words.

I've no idea what 'Cinematic Orchestra' sounds like, so the above are all out of context.

Garyi,

So you want to get into a bit of recreational jazz ? Well my friend, I'm here to warn you that all roads eventually lead to the hard stuff. You think you can handle it ?

OK, be it on your head. I think I know what CO is like. What you are after is mild jazz with lots of strings and stuff. To that end I can heartily recommend :

Vince Mendoza - "Epiphany". With the LSO.
John Scofield - "Quiet".
Stefano Di Battista - "Round About Roma". Arranged by Vince Mendoza.
Pat Metheny - "Secret story". Also with the LSO.

All of these are very beautiful.

Garyi,

Don't worry liking Cinematic Orchestra doesn't mean you like Jazz at all. It means you like Jazz tinged downtempo trip-hop soundtrack music designed to be played by Nathan Barley's who like sitting on their minimalist sofa admiring the copies of Blueprint and Twunt Magazine artfully displayed on their Phillipe Starke coffee table in thier Hoxditch loft conversion. They are kind of Morcheeba's more fahsionable and slightly cooler older brother (About whom it has been noted that in a perfectly parrallel universe somewhere CO are relaxing with a glass of Chardonnay listening to a CD of accountants analysing a balance sheet).

If you like CO but not Miles Davis I think it unlikely you'll like Ellington. You've also got a bit of a cheek claiming Mails is into muso-wanking then citing Zappa whose jazz moments are 3 hour atonal improvs inspired by obscure French avante-garde classicalists.

Have you tried stuff like Funki Porcini and the ubiquitous St Germain?

Track a day MP3s at http://www.cinematicorchestra.com/everyday.html

PS Gary remember that Jazz is like cricket and if if you truly undersntad it its impossible not to like it.

Surely anyone who does not appreciate the genius of Ellington is a lost cause.

Computers are supposed to work on 1's and 0's - in other words "Yes" or "No" - why does mine frequently say "Maybe"?......

Master Robinson, you have saved me. You see I am shallow, I cook food, I earn money, I get pissed.

For me lounge room lizard style down tempo malarky is much more preferable to Miles davis (Of which I was of course refeering)

I take your point on Zappa, but at least it didn't sound like porn music. Common Miles fans, just imagine the thwack thwack of slapping uglies with that music in the background and you know where I am coming from.

Everyone else thanks for the recommendations.

If any one is ineterested I have a mint copy of Grand Wazzoo on vinyl, for reasons beyond my understanding I bid on it again on Ebay when pissed and now have two.

Blimey, Matthew. I've obviously been out of the UK way too long - I didn't understand half of that! Nathan Barley? Blueprint & Twunt? Hoxditch loft conversion?

Please help,
Davie (who has just heard that Mafeking's been relieved)

garyi,

You might try this

Much more Jazz than CO and not without its porno moments but very good and ideally suited to the lifestyle of Watford's smart metroploitan elite Wink

I reckon you'd get on well with the old Jazzmatazz compilations that GURU (of Gangstarr) put together. Also, the Blue Note Breaks compilations are dead accessable, and might give you an idea of whatelse you'll get on with.

Guru's Jazzmatazz Volume I is a great album to start with, and IMO more enjoyable than Madlib. "Loungin'" is a great track. New Groove, The Blue Note Remix, Volume I is also very good.

Whatever your choices, enjoy!

Is the "Blue note remix" the one with Billie Holiday's "strange fruit" re-jigged as trip-hop ? I heard this blaring out of a speaker in a crowded Cafe the other day and let me tell you, the old trigger finger got mighty itchy. Is nothing sacred ? What next - Bach's Requiem set to a cha-cha ? Mad

An update to this thread , my enjoyment of modern jazz is taking a new twist, right now I am listening to and enjoying Jaga Jazzist, which is really getting rather heavy.

I am scared for myself.

You may also enjoy the "Future Sounds of Jazz" compilations on Compost records (I wonder if Dev will sniff this one out).

Minky, I think that was probably 'Verve Re-mixed' - don't have it but do have 'Verve Un-mixed' (the originals) which is quite good.

cheers,
