Sonic differences between stageline N, K or S?

Posted by: MikeMann on 16 April 2008

I am looking into adding a vinyl source to my Supernait/Flatcap2x/CD5x, and have come across an LP12/Ekos/Lingo without a cartridge. I am considering MM designs like the Clearaudio Maestro or MC designs like the Lyra Argoi, for example, and will choose the appropriate Stageline after deciding upon the cartridge. With that in mind, is there a sonic difference between the N, K, or S versions of the Stageline? Any advice or input is appreciated as this is a case where I can not simply audition the options. Also, and cartridge recommendations are welcome and appreciated. Thanks.

That's ok Mike. I'd leave your question here, as you will probably receive a completely different set of opposing answers than from HiFi corner. It's all part of the fun.

NK or S were a bit like EL and P with a touch of EL and O and the merest smidgeon of CS and N, but definitely no Y. Later on they sounded like RE and M combined with KL and F.

On the other hand I think phono stages and cartridges go together like a horse and carriage - the Stageline would sound nice with a bonnie cartridge like the Klyde.

Welcome to the forum

At the "lower" end of MC cartridges I'd go for an "S" Stageline with a Dyna 17D3. The Dyna works spectacularly well on the Ekos.

If you go for the deck make sure the Ekos is a goodun'. There are quite a few ones out there that are not good buys. If its an Ekos 2 the likelyhood will be that its okay though.

A good service on an LP12 always pays dividends. If you say where you are located someone may be able to give a recommendation.

Best wishes, Julian
