Need your help: Rampant daily Naim scams on eBay

Posted by: a529612 on 11 July 2006

These scumbags are getting ridiculous with daily their "contact me for buy it now" and "cut and paste" scams. How do we get rid of these bad apples that are ruining the Naim eBay marketplace for all the honest people out there?

We can't of course - only eBay can but so far they don't seem to be having much success.

My guess is that a single "scumbag" is responsible for all of them - although they carry different email addresses, the formatting & wording is common to them all.

The main concern is that he has found a way to hijack genuine user names & their positive feedback & no doubt the next step will be to try to hack into users Paypal accounts.

If he manages this, we will really be up shit creek ....

The way they hijack the user ids I found out on Monday. I clicked on an auction for an Ekos 2 which had a link for more info. I thought it was probably a link to the Linn website but I clicked anyway to check. It took me to what appeared to be the Ebay login page. I thought I had been logged out somehow and without thinking re-entered my login information. This didn't get me back to ebay and I then glanced up at the address bar and notice it said www.ebaeer....etc.
It was then that I realised I had been done and that they now had my login details and password.

I immediately changed my password on ebay and paypal and messaged ebay about it.

They took the auction down and sent me an automated response.

So far nothing appears to be for sale on my account but ebay don't seem that interested.

One unguarded moment is all it took.

Ebay have now come unstuck with this type of thing and their honeymoon period is well and truly over. They need to radically change the way they work, but in all probability they won't be able to stop it happening. I think now the Achilles Heel of Ebay has been found it spells the end for them.

It needs competition in the form of google or something. And the comp needs to have a lid on this problem. In terms of higher priced stuff it could be the end for eBay.

On the other hand there are mulli millions of smaller lower cost items which are never attractive to scammers. From ebays perspective its another 20p listing so eBay arn't going out of business even if they did away with the whole computer, photography and consumer electronics section.

As has been mentioned in the main the naim ones seem to be from the same person. It needs his computer taken down possibly with a virus or something to his email, but my feeling is this is a organised chappy who knows what he is doing.

A local lad had his motor bike on E-Bay. Some people got his address to come round and view the bike. Overnight the bike was stolen. Again not E-Bays fault but they will get blamed.

Chillkram an E-Bay Toolbar is supposed to check the URL to prevent you logging on to fraudulent E-Bay sites.

Thanks, Howard. I've downloaded it now. I hadn't even noticed it before.

The really scary time will come when these fraudsters and scammers learn to read and write in perfect English. Most of their efforts are so poor, amateurish and blatantly obvious that I almost don't feel sorry for those who get taken in by them.

A fool and his money....

Did the scammer get run over by a bus? Haven't seen any new listings from him for a while. Big Grin

This looks like an obvious scam. Scammer is bidding on his item?
