Shoe Laces

Posted by: Dungassin on 18 September 2010

Spent a fruitless hour today trolling round the shops in Burton On Trent looking for 100cm Flat Brown shoelaces. Couldn't find any at all. Most shoe shops didn't even stock shoe laces!
Tried the usual suspects (Wilko, Poundland, Sainsburys), but no joy there. Seems unless you want hugely long laces and in black, it's no joy. Ordered some on line, eventually.

Another reason why Woolworths is much missed.

Bought a new pair of Barker shoes last week. They came with a spare pair of laces. At the time, I thought "brilliant" and in principle, I still think "brilliant".

But I wonder if I will be able to find the laces when I need them in a couple of years time?

Cheers

The flat brown laces are for the shoes I use most often. Can't recall the make (I've had them a long time), but they have those floppy metal eyelets in some places. This means they go through laces at a fair rate of knots. They originally had leather laces, but they only lasted 6months. The cloth type laces last about the same time on average. Why flat laces? Well, they come loose/untied less often.

I've got a couple of pairs of Barkers, too. Never worn them often enough to use up the second pair of laces. Smile

Buy the long ones (Twice the length) cut them to length (or in half) then put a new aglet on the end.

Small bore heat shrink tubing makes a usable aglet.

Or one site is Shoe laces

For lacing methods here's my favoourite site

Already bulk ordered the shoe laces I wanted, but thanks anyway. Really just having a moan about the fact that most of our local shoe shops don't seem to sell shoe laces. Incidentally I think my shoes are Musolu's, or something like that IIRC. They are very comfortable, and even after 15 years of ownership and heavy use show very little in the way of wear!

If you can't get an Aglet or heat shrink. Candle wax is the next best thing to seal the ends.

Or a flame.

Candle wax is good but temporary. Super glue also works but be very careful!

A flame works wonderfully if the laces are synthetic materials. Cotton etc don't respond well.

I'm amazed at that site and I"ve sent it on to friends and family. I had tall work boots I tied in a ladder fashion after a friend's advice.

Now for my sneaks and good lace shoes.
