English Bitter in bottles - between 3 and 4%?
Posted by: stephenjohn on 24 November 2009
Does anyone know where on-line I can order English bitter in bottles? At the moment I am trying out beers with an alcohol content of approximately 3 to 4%? I find at this level I don't fall asleep after two, as I do with stronger ones. I enjoyed a Hooky Gold recently [it was 4.2% tho'] and like the lighter coloured ones.

Hi
Returned having been drinking Pictish Alchemist. My local is run by a very bright and discerning guy who orders the beer but rely's implicitly on his manager and staff, several from the Czech replublic.
Pilsner is a style of lager beer. (Hold on and don't wet your pants). This beer uses Bohemian hops which in the past could result in the death penalty for exporting ,such was it's unique qualities.Don't treat it as a lager but as a beer, perhaps an IPA.
This pub is very special and its regular clientel was grateful that it was on a county boundry and was assumed by Camra (I am NOT a member), to be in each others area for some years and so was not listed in the Good Beer guide.
This pub carries 10 real ales in superb condition.Five from handpump amd five from cask in a temperature controlled room. The buisness is huge and it could do with fewer and not more customers so it will remain anonymous.
There are also stunning and I do mean stunning beers using American hops, for example Dark Star's APA,(American Pale Ale).
For my taste Dark Star Brewery really is a star and in years to come publicans will be in a queue to buy their beer.
Regards.
(By the way I dont appear to have any signature.Could someone at Naim grant it as the signature box is unresponsive).
Regards.

You brought back some fond memories
Whatever did happen I'll keep a look out for Dark Star ales up here in Durham as I'm sure I'd enjoy em'!
....way back in the 80's in Sunderland (a place pretty bereft of real ale at the time - like most north east towns of that period) I absolutely loved a beer called Pitfield's Dark Star - I guess Pitfield's is no more or was taken over and re-named after it's famous brew?quote:WhatYouSeeandHear

WTF is vegan and vegetarian beer. What do normal beer makers put in their beer?

Cask beer has "finings" added to clarify (settle the sediment)
Finings can be made from many things, but most common is fish swim bladders
Vegans & veggies get a little excited consuming stuff made with dried fish gut, so a veggie fining is used.

After extensive research my favourite beer in this particular playingfield is Oakham Ales JHB at 3.8 it tastes like a 5.0.
Golden rule as ever though is never drink weaker stuff straight after stronger stuff. Or just stick to the stronger stuff.

Yes indeed
GHB has ont neen on the menu for a while but is a stunner.
Should also mention York Brewery.
Their "Decade" is great and the "Guzzler", is e real favourite of mine when available.
I was in York last year and had a couple of "Guzzler's" 3.6%,in the upstairs brewery pub.
Absolutely stunning.
Down South beers are mostly served from pump or direct from cask and the "Sparkler", which is an additional spigot on the pump which aerates the beer is uncommon.Obviously it would be of no use from the cask but whan you drink "Guzzler" from a pump with a sparkler it really brings more flavour out.The couple of pints I had in the Brewery were as good as anything I have ever drunk.Another light, hoppy, citrus beer to look out for.
Regards.

Also I have doubts about its design intent, is this just supplying the binge drinking get pissed quick mindset.
At £30 a bottle it's more expensive than a quite passable malt, so it's not going to appeal to your average pisshead.
Now as an exercise in marketing and promotion.....

I find the sparkler question interesting. I think I drank beer in the noth of England that had a creamy head the stayed on down the glass and it seemed less fizzy - was that possiblt the sparkler effect?
Some times I find bottled beer [bitter] more palatable when poured with a little vigour, ie slightly less fizzy and slightly more head. I tend to pour a cold lager down the [inside] of the glass tho'

Fixedwheel, agreed, 30 voucher's per pop is maybe a little OTT.
I heard on the steam radio yesterday that the brewery who make it - BrewDog of Fraserburgh - have been censured and had this brew or their 18% Tokyo taken off the market by the government.
Seems they are bad boys and are branded irresponsible over something to do with the marketing
