Naim DVD players!!!!!

Posted by: Tennispro on 29 July 2003

I was told over a month ago that Naim would be coming out with 2 DVD players. The release date was supposed to be in September. Has anybody heard one yet? Are they on schedule or will their release date be delayed. Maybe an administrater can let us know. The reason why I am asking is I would like to upgrade my CD5 and I would like to know how the CD section of these new units compares to the CD5 and the cdX2 and what upgrades will be available for their power supplies. I would appreciate any information anybody has.

Peter -

How do you know this? And do you know how the CD performance of the first player compares to the CD5? Can it take an external power supply?

I've been holding off a CD5 waiting for this player Smile Replacing two boxes and all that.

Obviously no-one can say yet if the new Naim DVD player(s) will out-perform the CD5 or CDX as a CD player, but I'd have to say that on the basis of past experience I'll be surprised if it does.

For instance I recently heard a demo of Meridian 598 DVD Player (~£3,200?) vs Linn Ikemi (£1,950), & on CD replay the Linn walked it. The Meridian wasn't bad at all, but the Linn was in a different class.

I've heard talk that the new Linn UniDisk can play all formats equally well, & maybe the Meridian 800 series too, but even if that's true we're talking serious money - I guess any trickle down to the CD5 price point will take a couple of years.

'course I could be wrong...

At 1,700 UK, it converts to about $2,700 - a few hundred more than a (new) CD5.

Sounds like the second player to come out would be the more upmarket player - so the first one is the one "at the CD5 pricepoint" or therabouts.

FWIW, Naim's AV stuff has kept up very nicely with the rest of the line soundwise and I am hoping the same is true with the CD/DVD players. I can't afford two systems Smile

I hope if Naim really comes out with a DVD player, it will be at least as solidly built as the cd5.

IMHO, the Japanese DVD players ie pioneers, sony, marantz etc are really flimsy, esp the tray. Doesnt inspire confidence at all.

I'll second that - in a matter of months two Rotel transports failed (duff batch?). To be fair they were collected and exchanged without question. Third time lucky and still going strong.

Not that it's impossible, but video circuits are very very noisy, so designing a combo player to be as "quiet" as a dedicated audio player is a monumental task.
In my experience I have not yet heard a player that does both as well as seperate chasis jobs, regardless of the cost of the combination deck.

Has anyone heard the unit that will be coming out? Has it been at any shows or has any dealers heard a demo unit? Maybe an administrator can give us the latest word from Naim?

We are aiming to unveil the first DVD player at the London Hifi show in September....

Thanks for the info Richard. Will it take much time between the unveiling and when dealers in the United States have a chance to listen for them selves to have an opinion. If not dealers then who would be first in line to hear these units? I apologies for my impatientness but I am trying to plan my upgrade path so I can go ahead and sell some pieces.

...ahh bahh. Same old story. Only Naim knows how to make a good product. This forum is getting so boring.

Richard,
any indication of the price?
Posted on: 03 August 2003 by Richard Dane
Neil,

I can't say at the moment - we'll see how Roy and the guys in R&D got on during the break...!

Silklee,

for the 5 series player I would think in terms of CD5 price + 35-55% depending upon options. We will confirm pricing upon its release.

Richard,

Sound quality (on a cd3-cds3 scale for example)?

Dave,

not having heard a prototype yet, I'm afraid I can't make any comments on how it sounds.

Andrew,

yes, it's a DVD player and will excel at video reproduction.

That's probably a fair comment but it's still a generalisation at the end of the day.

There are exceptions from Japan - the flagship Sony ES range are extremely well built as are the top of the range Toshiba's e.g. the SD900 (now available at a stupidly low price). You won't find flimsy trays on these machines.
