Going rate for an 82

Posted by: Team Reeves on 29 June 2001

Does anybody have an opinion on the going rate for a secondhand 82 ??

Not that I'm looking, of course...

GBP1350 for mine mid last year, not absolutely 'new' but good condition, boxed etc.

£1000 is about the base line, although there have been bargain snap-ups at a lesser price. This would be for the older (earliest) 82's, or someone desperate for the dosh.

A newer 82 (say less than four y.o.) in the £1300-£1600 range. Ensure it includes the NAPSC!

There have been a few small but significant updates to the NAC82 in its production lifetime. Later ones are thought better. HTH, YMMV.

I just snapped up a 6yr old example on Saturday including NAPSC & MM phono boards for £1350 (remote, box & manuals also)

I'd been looking for 3-4 mths and decent examples seemed to have temporarily dried up!

However, together with the 250 & Hicap I'd bought for £900 & 400 respectively a few months back I'm pretty pleased (upgraded from 92/140!!!)

Chaps

The availability of 82 seems to come and go like drifts of sands.

I bought a 2 yr old in mint condition for £870.00.

It was a tough negotiation but I had the notes on me and I never budged from my original offer whereas he kept dropping his price bit by bit.

Some people grab at the first offer, so exploit it and go for it.

Regards

Mick

is this for an 82??? my god, what a fantastic bargain for that age!!!

actually 102's appear to be just as difficult to come by. there were loads of 72's and 140's about last time i checked.

I got an 'immaculate' (then) 7 year old 82 incl. napsc, link plugs, s-boards, box and manual for 1100 quid.

When I bought the beast last summer there were 3 or 4 on loot for anything up to 1700 ukp. I was very pleased with the bargain I'd got.

Sadly, it's now in Salisbury for repair :-(

I don't really blame anybody for this (neither the seller nor Naim - these things happen), but I understand now why some people won't buy s/h where I couldn't see the point at all before.

YMMV etc.

John,

Won't you end up with an 82 in great shape for far less than the new price? Wouldn't the extra time with the 82 be purchased at a high price?

Thanks for all the contributions.

Steve C 00 - looks like you got the one for sale close to me, hope it sounds great !

As I said, I wasn't really looking anyway.

But I will be !

Update on CDI coming soon.

Phil- you are, of course, absolutely right. I'm just feeling miserable and sorry for myself into my 3rd week without it and there's another 3 more to endure. Shipping ain't cheap either.

I guess what I meant was that I can understand some people wanting the peace of mind of buying new. If it goes wrong then you get it fixed or replaced no hassle. I still intend to buy s/h though...

And can't wait for it to come back:-D

Very good point, Phil.

And Jon, despite the international shipping hassle, you at least know you'll have a totally ship-shape amp good for another 8-10 years now! Naim service, second to none.

As Mick implies, there's no bigger incentive to a seller, be it cars, hi-fi or anything, than a big bag of notes.

Golden rule of buying things: -

There's always more out there, never, ever get attached!

ken, just noticed from the other forum that you were at IC; I was also there from 72-75 and again 79-80, what dept were you ?

I was not involved in audiosoc at all - too poor -just managed to save enough out of my grant in the first year to buy a Pioneer PL12D turntable to play through an Akai 1721L open-reel.

I spent most of my time organising concerts with Ents, you will remember what fabulous line-ups we had for £1 a throw - Elton John, Genesis, Queen etc Any other Ents out there ?

Jon,

Situree-simasita. I entirely missed your address. A 6 week loss can cut deeply into the savings. But you ought to be able to pick up some Audio Note stuff much cheaper than in GB or the US to hold you until the 82 comes back....

yes, i was at IC 72-76 and then as an very old man in 99-00. 72-75 electrical engineering (stayed in beit hall whole of academic year 72); 76 maths dept for msc in numerical analysis; then more recently 99-00 in the management school doing an msc in quantitative finance.

what about you? i guess this is either padded cell stuff or we can communicate some more via e-mail. mine is kchakahwata@aol.com

Also when you sell your cars, hi-fi etc do your research. Look on Loot, Ebay etc, Exchange & Mart, Hi-fi News to know what the market conditions are for your kit. That way you will make your price look attractive and not undersell either. Don't be afraid to turn down offers (for example 870 quid for a 82 would have been greated with a firm 'sorry but no' by myself - nice negotiating Mick!). I've done so without hesitation when selling my 82 and car. Don't get spooked, you can afford to be firm with 'in-demand' items such as an 82, 52 Hi-Cap etc as long as you have done your research you can expect another phone call in an hour's time.

Would anyone like to offer me an 82 for the 'going rate'?!

Yours in anticipation, Steve

There are two in Loot - I'm saving hard.

If thats a HiCap, plus 82 incl NPASC as you say, for £1650 thats pretty good value assuming all's well. With going rate for a HiCap around £400-£450 you're likely looking at loads of 'grin factor' and an 82 at £1150 - not bad at all. Of course, you might be inclined to summons the 'spirits of Mick' and beat the vendor down into a more submissive price!

If you're using phono, you'll need the approprate '5' boards - these might indeed be included. Same boards for 92/102/52/82.

Well I'm expecting to get a nice new 52 early October. I have an 82 so will probably part exchange as when I try to sell 2nd hand equipment it's not the flavour of the month. I don't expect the dealer to give me much for it as it is three years old so I'll probably have to do a deal like this:

New 52 £3,685, £1,500 IFC for 6 months, about £1,000 for the 82 and the rest cash.
