D200 / CS2 RAW file question

Posted by: Right Wing on 09 October 2006

Ok, I am writing this for my dad, he has a D200 and photoshop CS2, there doesnt seem to be compatibility between NEF RAW file images and CS2, whats the best way to get by this please?

thanks for your time

My guess is that you need a RAW plug-in for Photoshop2. I bought a Nikon D70 and was most annoyed to find that they expected me to pay for the software that allowed me to read RAW files. I got round it by getting a RAW file reader from a friend who bought a cheaper Nikon with it supplied (free!) on a CD. Having had a quick look at nikon.co.uk I suspect you might be suffering from the same problem, however Adobe CS2 now supports the D200 (see here http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/cameraraw.html the product is only beta but you can download it here http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3544
Hope that helps.

I'm no expert, but I would wager your Dad may need a plug in for Adobe CS, so it can read the NEF RAW file.

Perhaps doing a Batch file conversion might solve the issue?

Check the link out, it explains it in more detail, hope that helps.

Edit; there you go beat me to it.

Good site Beano. Hopefully the plug-in will fix it for free. I might be maligning Nikon but I never understand how they can sell camera and then expect the buyer to pay more to access the NIkon proprietary files. It's a bit like record companies expecting us to buy a CD for home and one for the car.........

You can download the plugin for D200 from Adobe's website.

I agree - Adobe's website allows you to download the 'camera raw' plugin for free.

I would also recommend the Nikon capture 4 software which provides the best means of manipulating raw files without affecting the original stored pixels. You can then save out as TIF etc and loads into CS2 to further proces...

We also use Nikon Capture 4, which is priced around $100.

It's Capture NX now, so you can pick up Capture 4 cheap.

RW,
count.d is quite right, and Capture NX gets good reviews.
I'm using Capture 4 (with my D70s) and I'd happily send you a copy (plus crack) for free if you wish......

Having said that, if your father can stretch to a D200 surely an extra hundred quid or so is worth it for Nikon's dedicated RAW conversion software.....

Let me know if you wish a copy all the same - arf005@hotmail.com

Cheers,
Ali

Arf there is a general rule online that this sort of thing is not openly discussed on a manufacturers forum Roll Eyes

Thanks guys, i downloaded the 'camera raw' from the adobe website, however when i run the plug in, it fails to update CS2 - it asks me to re install the application - which is strange, anyone know why?

If i cant get this to work, he will have to use converting software.

thanks for all your replies.

CS2 does have the facility to open up the NEF files, but I prefer to use Capture for this as it produces better results.

Adobe probably know why - have you called them?

Another vote for Capture. I've been playing with Capture NX recently and except for it being a bit slow it seems really clever. All the white balance settings on the camera are there and can be tinkered with, it keeps all the original RAW data intact with all your changes just 'sitting' on top for later adjustment and the control point adjustments are fab - I'm still amazed how it seems to instinctively know what I'm trying to do.

For basic (brightness, contrast, levels, cropping) adjustments it looks like you don't need anything else. The only missing bit where you need to revert to Photoshop, PictureWindow or similar is for painting & cloning (getting rid of the lampost growing out of someone's head etc).

There's a 30 day download on Nikon USA .

Thanks for wasting everyone's time.

Why did I waste everyones time? I was very grateful for peoples replies that pointed me in the right direction.

Do you think I am the only person on here that uses a hooky copy of something?

I do not want to be associated with this corrupt thread.

Adam,
I would be grateful if you could delete my replies.

I think the point at which you wasted our time was the point at which you asked for help to diagnose a problem which is clearly due to stolen software...

Yes, we now know why, it's not strange at all, you stole the software...

Not so, I re-installed CS2 this evening and the update works fine now works fine. - Thank you

Strange how just about everyone has "failed" to notice the offer from a certain member to send me software with a crack. hmm >

I really don't want to get into a slagging match over this. If you want to break copyright and use stolen software, go for your life. I won't lose any sleep over it.

However, if you want to get help making it all work because you can't call the legitimate helpline, please be kind enough to inform the people who's time you're relying on for help, and allow them to make a decision as to whether they want to get involved.

Garyi pointed out to arf005 that he oughtn't to be offering illegal copies of software. I didn't see the need to add to that.
