It is an excellent shop. I popped in the other night and Richard Hawley was doing an in-store appearance. Just half an hour with 2 guitars and double bass but very nice. Loads of vinyl in the place as well. oh and the in store hifi wasn't too shabby either!

Cheers

I remember a Rough Trade shop on Portobello Rd. when I visited London 9 yearss ago. I found it pretty sad, but there was a really cool shop called Minus Zero records a few blocks down that was awesome. The owner even let me take stuff and send him some money after I got home.

Can we get Rough Trade to re-issue old vinyl?

I sure would love a copy of Static and Silence by The Sundays but the last copy had just left the cobweb-ridden warehouse before I could get it (7 years ago?)

The Rough Trade record label and shop are completely different companys. They went their separate ways in the 80's.

Poor you, Brian!

I went to the Rough Trade East place on Friday night. As well as having a whole collection of music to buy, most of which I've never heard of, I got to pick any CD I wanted and try it out on one of a bank of CD5i/Headline combos they had on the front counter! Very cool Cool

Popped in on Friday about mid-day, so only just missed you Jon, in geological terms.

I found a handful of Johnny Cash vinyl and a couple of Elvis Presley CDs. Appart from that, the rest of their catalogue I'd never heard of - and probably wouldn't buy, given the generic descriptions used to promote the content.

Not really my scene........

Now the next bit will hurt - but here goes........the background music sounded.......more Mantavarni than cool!!!!!!!very sweet, pleasant, soothing, non-descript. But not inspiring. Perhaps this was just a 20 minute lunch-time abberation - perhaps.

Cheers

There was no sign of any sweet, pleasant or non-descript classical music playing when I visited, Don. Just a pretty hard-hitting dance remix compilation I seem to recall. Appropriate I suppose for a Friday evening!

Did you have any trouble finding it, btw? I ended up walking the entire length of Brick Lane before going back the other way and guessing on a turning (should have taken a map with me of course Roll Eyes ).

Funniest moment for me was when the guy pointed to one of the CD5i's on the counter and said, "Corr...£5,000 CD player, that." I resisted the temptation to correct him......

Yep, exactly the same - started at the north (Shorditch) end beside the old brewery, walked the entire length then returned to the old Truman brewery parts, dived into a side-street full of alfresco pavement cafes and after 50 yards.... hey-presto! In a building called "Execution" IIRC?

Just to clarify - they weren't actually playing Mantavarni - it just sounded........sort of backgroundish....

If Sarah Brightman, Carley Simon, Pink Floyd, Cliff Richard, Elvis Presley or Clasical is your scene - don't bother. But if you are turned on by "....and now for something completely diferent...." then its probably well worth a visit.

And despite the Matarvarni backdrop, you could tell that the sound system was a cut above the average HMV/Virgin store.

Cheers

Isn't it "Mantovani"? Smile

Of the artistes you list, Floyd and a bit of Elvis, maybe, but I took my visit on as an opportunity to try something different, so I actually asked the guy what of the latest releases did he like and/or thought was quite good. He pulled out four albums and invited me to try them out, so I did - and bought them! Very different to what I'm used to but one thing they all have in common - I've never heard of them before. So, something fresh and a bit different to add to my collection for a change, and for that reason I may visit the shop again.

probably spot-on Jon.

But I think my version is vague enough and close enough to qualify - bit like his music!!!!!!!

Glad you liked the records you bought.

Thanks, Don.

I'll tell you what, though - I doubt they've got any Lindisfarne records, which would be a damn shame Winker

Very nice idea. You go in there with your I-Pod and find out what music can really sound like. 10 out of 10.

Yes it is an indisputable truth - Rough Trade is one of the best record shops, possibly even shops,in the world. And the new East store is even better still. An amazing history, great staff, great product, great in-store live performances. It is unrepentently specialist, but on every occasion I've visited I've ended up buying something I hadn't previously heard of - what more of a recommendation could anyone want?
