Which iPOD?

Posted by: Guy D on 23 October 2006

Simple question given a full range of choice which would you pick?

It's needed mainly to listen at work, and to transfer music to and from holiday home. Obviously the functionality of the 80g iPOD is nice, but do I need it?

Is there a difference in sound quality using the same format on different iPODs?

Thanks

As far as I know the sound quality is the same.

Larger memory will allow you to use Apples Lossess compression and still get alot onto you're ipod. (300mb ish an album)

Additionally think about how much you will use the video functionality - it actually pretty genius using a TV adaptor on your mac and recording tv shows and just sending them to the ipod.

Depends on whether you are happy to buy used or re-conditioned, or if you want new. The DAC used upto the 60Gb Photo was reckoned to be the best sounding, Red Wine will only mod units up to that model, so if you can be bothered to hunt around for a good one, I'd say thay was the one to go for. There is an 8Gb Nano out now, but it is reckoned not to sound as goos as the old 6Gb mini. Not that I'm actually sure on a blind test anyone but an Ipod technician, working with them everyday, could be expected to tell the diffence, considering that choice of earphones almost certainly has a bigger influence on sound quality than the machine it's self.

The iPod can be used as a harddrive as well, which is very useful, and its for storing your photos.

So long and short if you can afford it get the largest capacity, if there is one thing I have learnt you cannot have enough space

Get the biggest drive you can.

Thanks

Much as I had thought.

The 60g seems to have finished now. Presumably the 80g's out for Christmas.

I second Diode's recommendation above about the Gen4 60GB iPod as modified by Red Wine Audio I searched out a Gen4 iPod a couple of months ago, and was able to find one new at Mac Mall, but I understand from the HeadFi forum that the Apple refurbished units, often sold by Small Dog Electronics, are in most ways indistinguishable from new. I have had the modded version back for about two months now and am still blown away by how good it can sound with Apple Lossless files. With a Porta Corda amp and Etymotic ER4S cans, the experience equals my big rig in terms of involvement and overall enjoyment in a portable environment. In head to head comparison on the big rig, the sound equals the Rega Apollo in many ways, and closely approaches the CD5 on identical material (Apple Lossless v the original CD). Perhaps a bit of overkill given the original thread query, but I couldn't help popping in with my opinion.
