Active(ish) Kabers - would this work?

Posted by: Jeremy Roebuck on 19 July 2003

Currently have two 250s driving Keilieidhs with an IXO crossover

Bought Kabers on ebay - ultimatly will get 3rd 250 & 3-6 snaxo

meantime could I retain the bass passive crossover and use the IXO to split the bass & treble

any help much appreciated

You can do what you like. But this sounds way too complex. I'd try them passive, then biamped passive.

IMO the Naim solution to active Kabers is going to be unjustifiably expensive, unless the right bits turn up second hand. If you're set on them active then explore the Linn solutions which turn up cheaply occasionally.

Jeremy-

My impression is that you can passively bi-amp or tri-amp the Linn Kabers using Naim amps, but that if you went active, it would need to be all the way: tri-amped only with an appropriate Snaxo (if available) and a power supply and three stereo amps.

Although Naim clearly doesn't endorse passive multi-amping, with speakers as hard to drive as the Kabers, it may be worth experimenting with. This is workable from a Hi-cap or a Supercap as they have three parallel outputs, although some early Hi-caps only had two, so you would be well advised to check into that.

Personally, I wouldn't go active until I knew that I liked the new speakers passive first, and got a good result in my room. If all of that is true, then it may pay to take them even further. You will have to go into the Kabers and rewire them for active use.

Good luck

With a pair of NAP250 and a pair of passive Kabers there are 4 options,

1. single 250 as per normal.
2. using a pair of 250s as a pair of 135s without fans.
3. horizontal biamping, one 250 drives all the left and right bass and bass/mid, the other the treble. This may require some cleverness on the tri-wire inputs at the speaker.
4. vertical biamping, use one 250 per channel, one side drives the treble, the other the bass/bass mid. This will require some interconnect customisation.

I would start with '2' since it is definitely better than '1' and requires no clever twiddling. I suspect '4' would be better than '3' but experience will tell, and in practice '2' may win.

Do passive Kabers have 'tri-wire' inputs?

I think the Kaber is a very fine speaker. It can be applied in more room situations than the SBL, allowing more variations in distance from the wall and toe in without looking odd. But if you're 'into' Naim, and have a room which would fit the SBL, then that's the natural place to be. Active is then a simple and obvious thing to do with two NAP250s, no jiggery-pokery with custom crossovers.
