BBC Four Sessions (Music)

Friday 27th April 2007, 22:00 to 23:00

Series of unique concerts by musicians from around the world. This edition features acclaimed country-folk singer/songwriter Gillian Welch, accompanied by guitarist and collaborator David Rawlings. Welch draws on folk, country, bluegrass and Appalachian mountain ballads to create her own sometimes bleak American music which somehow sounds both ancient and modern.

I quite agree, what with ' John Peel' Day and all that. Possible 'Diccus Day' would have been more appropriate on 'Hospital Radio' in Carlisle General...................... or 'Radio Cheese FM'

A playlist with all my dirge would kill half the patients off in carlisle General. quarter would run for the hills and the rest (I think thats another quarter) to Debenhams for the soiled bedding sale.

Well thats the show over. IMO there hasn't been many artists who have put out such a fine body of work. 4 albums of such high quality. Keep meaning to download all the extra stuff she has available on her site will now make a point of it tomorrow.

I happened to tune in just at the right moment. Watched it all and thought it was very enjoyable. Never heard of her before but I’ll certainly be looking to buy some CD’s.

She seemed OK but nothing unusual enough to make me find out ant more about her.

Howard

PS got better towards the end.

Well I watched it and thought they were brilliant - David Rawlings guitar playing is amazing and I love the combination of their voices and guitars. Also thought that their version of "the weight" with the old crow medicine show guesting was as good as the original - funny thing though it was only this that reminded me I had taped it 3 years ago and forgotten all about it.Der!

I watched the programme on BBC4 last Friday just because the Radio Times said positive things about David Rawlings' guitar. Yes that was interesting, but the combination of the two of them playing simple acoustic songs, harmonising and creating such beautiful effect was brilliant. Loved it. So much so that I bought her first 3 albums from Amazon for <£16 total. I adore "Time (the Revelator)". Thoroughly recommended - a great discovery.

You should also think about The Old Crow Medicine Show's second album which was produced by David Rawlings. Really good disc.
