CD 5 phenomenon

Posted by: Cletus Awreetus-Awrightus on 26 April 2001

Hi all, last night after moving my speakers, I played a CD called EMI Audio test disc, I think, to check all was well. There are a few tracks on this CD that are basically clicks, ie full left, left, centre and so on.
Bizarrely, I get only one click at the beginning of each track, and then silence. I know there are more clicks, since I played it on an old Mission player.
Now, I can't say I'm devastated by missing the extra clicks, but....what else am I missing on other CD's that is not so obvious?
Could anyone that has this disc please play it on their Naim player to see if it is just me?
I'd also be interested in any other theories.

What should happen is, the voice says 'clicks far left' then the clicks go tic, tic ,tic, tic, until the next track 'clicks left channel' tic , tic, tic, tic and so on through to 'far right.
Quite annoying actually, but the point of it is to establish the stereo field.
The booklet does mention if the centre clicks are less pinpointed then the sytsem may be out of phase, but you can still hear them on other players.

Sounds like the left channel of your system is 'T-U'. Two theories:

1. Check that the connections to your left loudspeaker are still connected - at both amp and speaker ends. Its quite easy to pop a 4mm plug out when moving speakers around

2. Are you using a DIN-Phoono lead. If so, is the left channel connected?

Simple stuff but its easy make a mistake.

your speakers are connected in phase so that the +ve and -ve connections are the same way round on each speaker and at the amp end too?

Thanks guys, I'll check it out tonight.
Just to clarify, it does 'click' once per track, and the one 'click' is in the right spot each time, but only one click confused

well, all the cables look to be the right way round and firmly in place. I stuck Mahlers 2nd on,sat back and it sounded fantastic, even if I was missing some clicks big grin
I guess I'll never know about the EMI Audio Check Disk, but if I do find anything out I'll bore everyone here with it.
smile
PS I tried it again in my second system and apart from the fact that it was out of phase and the speakers were the wrong way round, I still got all the clicks (yawn)

Do you know where I can get hold of one of those disks?

Thanks

Jonathan
sorry I posted this morning without reading your reply, you have the same disk by the sound of it. I will check the phase, you've described the process better than I've seen anywhere.
I think you have a CD 3.5? My guess is that all naim 3 - 5 series play these tracks wrongly.
Everything points to there being more than one click per track, MC says clicks, track length and one click is v difficult to pinpoint on it's own.
Thanks all the same

Matthew
I bought the CD in HMV oxford st. a couple of years back, in a funny little stand full of 'audio disks' and sound effects. Wish I'd bought more of them. I had a quick look on amazon and HMV.com with no success.
It's on the EMI classics label so it may have been on LP at some point.

Cheers

Paul.

...did you try starting the track with the display set to show seconds and then backing up?

Glad the system is on-song so this is all not a big deal really.

Jonathan, I'm right aren't I? Stick the CD in your PC, I guarantee you'll get all the clicks smile
