which desktop speakers
Posted by: scottyhammer on 24 September 2009
Hi All,
Am about to buy an imac to replace my old pc and wondered if you guys have any recommendations for decent sounding desktop speakers and sub. ?
dont want to go overboard but the prices for these speaker packages in the apple store seem rather OTT.
Thanks, Scotty

powered (active) studio monitors? or you can get something by Bose or any number of crap speaker makers.
Recommendation, get an old Nait and a proper pair of budget friendly standmounts.

Too far away to feed into the main system then?
If yes, then as pcs says.

I bought a pair of Audio Engine 2 powered speakers for my daughter, and they are pretty good. hve not tried to match a subwoofer to them. Not in same class as Naim...

2nd vote for Audio Engine 2's. I have enjoyed using them in a bunch of settings including desktop, TV, and digital piano.
If you do a bit of research, you will see that they generally receive unusually positive reviews. AE 2's are clearly not audiophile speakers, but they are a terrific value for the money. Portable and undoubtedly better than the usual cheap desktop fair. For the money, I think these are hard to beat.
Let us know what you decide and how it works out.

Have you thought about a nice set of headphones? Depending on your living setup, it can be nice not to disturb others whilst working away on the 'puter. It also helps when you "accidentally" find yourself on a website your other half might not appreciate

nSats sound best in the near field. I would go for that if I could possibly swing it, even second hand.
