Hi Keith,

I weakened. Winker

After a liquid lunch I took the bull by the horns and ordered the set. I feel liberated from the dilemma now. If slightly poorer. Big Grin

Guys
Check out the cdjapan website. Great swathe of new releases! Hooray! Crea, Stones, Hendrix and more. Cool

As president of pendants U.K. I must point out The Hendrix & Stones SHM CDs are reissues.
The 1st issues sound brilliant, so I recommend them.

Also worth consideration are the three new SHM CD comps,
scheduled for release on 3/9/2008 ...

Rock/Soul/Blues Edition 2

Jazz Edition

Classical Edition

Dear El Presidente
Reissues or not matters not a jot to me but your endorsement is welcome! I missed them first time around. "Who's Next" and "Live at Leeds", "Fresh Cream" "Disraeli Gears" and "Wheels of Fire", "Blind Faith", "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs", "Brothers and Sisters" and "At the Fillmore East" have also all been ordered. A real treasure trove!

Already had the new comps on order - they are a real bargain.

Hendrix duly ordered...

Another convert! I had some with me the day I came up Tony but we all got too wrapped up in other stuff! How do you think the sound compares with your LP12? The more I spend on these the less I can justify adding vinyl replay to my system!

Let the format wars (re-)commence!

maybe there is something wrong with my hearing. after I bought a few John Mayall, Van Morrison and recently the Colosseum Anthology, I decided not to spend anymore money on the shm CDs. I rather get the audiophile mfsl, analogue production and other fine labels. All the Steve Hoffman mastered CCR on analogue are great, as well as Donovans Storyteller and so on

Not necessarily urs; if you're happy with your records why not relax & enjoy them? For me the great thing about SHM is all the releases where there was no sonically good CD release previously.

However when I compared Bob Marley & The Wailers 'Catch A Fire' - Steve Hoffman remastered DCC Gold v SHM CD - I concluded they are both excellent. If I had to choose between one it would be difficult, but I would pick the SHM because to my ears there's lots more detail, & it sounds more natural.

I think the SHM CDs I've heard so far are sonically excellent,
& the John Mayall releases are far superior to my standard CDs.

But ultimately I would trust my ears;
if you aren't hearing a VFM improvement with SHM I wouldn't buy them.

Like a few other folk on here I really love the sound of my 555 and can quite happily live with both. They sound different and ultimately the LP12 wins it.

I've only just got my first duo of SHMs (lots more on order of course!), and listening to them plus J.N.'s copies, they certainly narrow the gap. In the case of John Mayall's "The Blues alone", the SHM against my fairly noisy old Mono vinyl original; IMHO the SHM wins on listening pleasure.

(But you KNOW you really want an LP12 Chris! Big Grin )

I received my SHM copy of this today.

Very nice indeed. The SHM discs have greater clarity and resolution of detail, but with a smoother more analogue-like presentation.

Good news on the Steely Dan set Steve.

Ok but are these CDs really worth 4 times the price of the same CD in the bargain bin

How about Bjork CDs for example.

If i had a good turntable I would probably buy the 180gram vinyl version over the SHM CD at the same price. But I don't have vinyl -so is the SHM CD as good as say HDCD?
Posted on: 15 July 2008 by 555
It's all down to personal preference; for me they are worth the money.
They work out about £15 per CD delivered if you shop in the right place.

The Bjork SHM CDs sound much better than my standard UK CDs.

I've found the HDCDs I've bought very variable in quality,
whereas the SHM CDs have been consistently good.

I would compare good quality HDCD (e.g. Doors 'Perception' box set) to SHM CD quality.
I did a three way comparison with 'Catch A Fire'

1: Original Tuff Gong Mastered by Barry Diament
2: DCC Gold remastered by Steve Hoffman.
3: SHM CD Mastered from the original two track analog master tapes by Ted Jensen.

Not surprise they all sound good & I could happily listen to any of them.
I prefer the SHM CD version because it has much more detail & sounds more natural.

There are three bargain SHM CD samplers you could try Briz.
Each release is two discs.
One is a standard CD & the other a SHM CD,

both with the same contents for you to compare at your leisure...

Rock/Soul/Blues Edition 2

Jazz Edition

Classical Edition

They cost 952 yen from CD Japan + 800 yen P&P (total roughly £8.32).

I cannot better John's great summary. Every disc I have played so far has had a tremendous sense of being just right. And it has encouraged me to delve into music which I might otherwise have overlooked.

i have the catch a fire deluxe cd and prefere the bonus disc which is original mix ,is the shm copy the standard mix ?.
Posted on: 16 July 2008 by 555
I've not heard the deluxe edition Keith,
but to my ears the SHM mix sounds like the other two versions I have.
The SHM says "Mastered from the original two track analog master tapes by Ted Jensen", so I guess that means it's the same mix?
