shm cds verdict.

just received my shm cds from japan , free fire and water and cream disraeli gears.first free ,this was different from the british pressing, it sounded like it had been remixed which it had not been guitars sounded easier to follow and drumming clearer .the cream cd was not the new deluxe remaster but the first remaster which i thought was better , again the sound was good with the group easier to follow .these are not impressive cd more natural.has anybody else got any different titles on shms cds

Steve,
I look forward to hearing your thoughts on the Hendrix and Lizzy albums

Hi Munch,

The Lizzy is much better than the previous compilation I had, and much LOUDER.

The Hendrix is a little better than the Ultimate Hendrix set, but also much LOUDER.

So, with both these examples, volume matching is crucial because the old 'earhole con-trick' of louder must be better can give the impression of a vast difference at first. But the Lizzy is the most obvious improvement over what I had. The Quincy Jones is the same level as my copy and improvements far more subtle. I'm not sure I go for the techy/marketing explanantions because examining the file sizes of the tracks compared, the SHM CDs are 2-3mb larger per track.

Doesn't this suggest a different copy? Rather than all this better read for the laser stuff?

Confused

hi Steve

As long as it sounds "better" that'll do for me. In general the SHMs do sound an improvement to me. Haven't had time to get to more than afraction of the ones that have come in yet. Lizzy comp awaits me. I do like the Hendrix comp though. A whole raft of one and two album packets were sent out to me yesterday. I am away in the US on biz for a week from Sunday so the backlog will grow!

Hi Chris,

Don't get me wrong I'm happy they are better (to varying degrees) but it intrigued me to rip them and examine the files. They are consistently larger and the Lizzy ones by a fair bit. Which also happens to be the larger improvement of the three.

I hate co-incidence. If it really is the material the CD is made from...I'd love to know more about how and why others are not doing it.

Fair enough Steve. As you know I don't generally rip my CDs. I did enough to load my 8gb iPod Nano and then stopped! As aresult, I don't know the file sizes. 2 or 3 mb is enough of a difference to arouse some suspicion however. On some of the SHM descriptions though they do claim that it is taken from a previous reissue.

Chris,

I see we have a similar level of interest/amount of time on our hands. Big Grin

I must say this Music Room adds a great deal. I've been introduced to some stuff that I doubt I would ever have found.

Cheers,

Steve

I think I have got pretty well all the "Gold" series. So far, Cream, the Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rod Stewart (the great early albums) and Traffic have all sounded bloody good. Still got Steppenwolf, Moody Blues, Velvet Underground, the Jam, Robert Palmer and Peter Frampton to try. I know compilations are not very purist, but they work ok for me!

My disks arrived from cdjapan and they sound damn good too, how ever I must be most unlucky as once again Customs have stung me for a further £15 tp pay on delivery.

I hardly ever get away with importing goods!!! Frown

I thought they all went through the same P.O. site at Mount Vernon.
How many discs do you order at a time?
Limiting to two at a time seems to work.

If you look at the SHM CD notes it will tell you whether it has been remastered or not.

have just received two of the jam shm cds , setting sons and sound effects . of the two the sound effects seems to be the better sounding of the two . the jam recording in general are not the best but i did have sound effects on lp and this does from memory improve on that . i do not have the standard cds to compare but the one to try would be sound effects .

555, all my parcels seem to go the mount pleasant in london so maybe other branches could be more vigilant. think yours is in glasgow.
Posted on: 02 August 2008 by 555
Whoops Kieth; I meant Mount Pleasant in my previous post.
Although I live in the Northern Isles,
all of my non-EU import packages arrive with the Mount Pleasant stamp on them.
I understand the P.O. has centralised this operation,
along with others - e.g. all international returns are handled in Belfast.

I have copies of the last Gold issue of some of the Jarrett titles which have a different EAC reading than the original issues. So like Lontano I would be interested as I don't mind spending a few squid on Jarrett.

One strange omission is Koln Concert.
Posted on: 03 August 2008 by Chris Kelly
I am interested in these but it is a daunting list for a newcomer to these artists. Any advice on ,say, the first 10 to go for?

Chris - this would be my choice of what could be a very rewarding adventure for you. I have all the albums already and am a big fan of Keith Jarrett and Pat Metheny so my list is heavier on those.

A lot of the Jarrett ones are the trio - Still Live, Tribute, Blue Note, Whisper Not, and Norway, so you could choose a couple of them first. Belonging and My Song are his European Quartet albums as his Personal Mountains my favourite Jarrett album.

Let me know if you want more info.

Keith Jarrett — Still Live — UCCE-9126
Keith Jarrett — The Koln Concert —UCCE-9122

Received today from HMV Japan, "Dire Straits" and "John Mayall's Bluesbreakers". Got the first of those on now. It sounds wonderful. Oh yes, we are indeed the sultans of swing!
