EMI own Capitol Chris.

Thinking about it I did know that. It would be great if the EMI catalogue could get SHMed. Beatles, Floyd etc. That would be worth the premium!

Two shm-cds arrived this morning - Van Morrison's "Enlightenment" & "Inarticulate Speech of the Heart".

Import duty - 0. Excise duty - 0. VAT - £4.60p.
Parcelforce handling fee - £13.53p!!! Eek

No sign of my "Dire Straits", (dispatched from Japan on 4th August by registered air mail) yet - contacted CD Japan & they want me to wait a while longer before they do anything... Frown

Ouch Tony! If you use registered airmail it is delivered by Parcelforce & you'll get clobbered every time. I use the standard airmail (SAM) service. IME so far only 2 of 30ish packages have got a charge; one was The Who My Gen box set so no surprise due to value, & for the other the postie was so deep in a mobile 'phone conv' she forgot to ask for the money. I've had no lost packages yet. Another advantage of using SAM is it's delivered by the Royal Mail & they 'only' charge an £8 collection fee, if they remember to ask for it!

A veritable blizzard of stuff shipped today, all in ones and twos so hopefully no exctra charges. Sod's law says they'll all arrive after we go away on 21/9!

ParcelFarce are a total pain I have to say. As 555 says, SAM seems ok.

Had an interesting evening yesterday round at Graham Russell's house. First time I have heard his system since he exchanged his 300 for a 500.
I took along a selection of SHM discs and, where I had them to hand, the non SHM version of what appears to be the same master. Discs used included "The Very Best of Sheryl Crow", "Frampton Comes Alive" (SHM vs MFSL Gold), "Wheels of Fire" (SHM vs DCC Gold), "Still on Top - the Greatest Hits" Van Morrison and "Experience Hendrix".

In each case we chose a track, played the nonSHM then the SHM. The only case where SHM was not definitely superior was on "Crossroads" from "Wheels of Fire", which was pretty much even. SHM seems to lift a veil from between the listener and the performer, and push the latter well into the room.

It was extraordinary, and our respective partners (both of whom are at best tolerant of our anorak ways!) also agreed with what we had heard.

SHM didn't have it al its own way though. We played "Sultans of Swing" from the SHM eponymous Dire Straits album and compared it with the same track on the HDCD Best of entitled "Sultans of Swing". The HDCD was definitely the better sounding version.

Talking of HDCD, the SHM Frampton is HDCD encoded.

All in all, a very enjoyable evening which had Mrs R glaring at me as Graham said that he was going to pick up some SHM software now, having been quite sceptical before we started!

And the 500? Need you ask? Cool

Interesting report thanks Chris. Smile

It was heartening to see the look of sheer disbelief on Graham's face as the first SHM was played. He muttered something like "How can that possibly happen? They're the same zeroes and ones!". Big Grin

A shed load more discs have arrived including various "unplugged" albums, Small faces and Kinks compilations, Best of Dusty, the second rock sampler and the jazz and classical samplers, Keith Jarrett's Koln Concert, a couple of classicalalbums and others I don't have to hand. Oh yes, Martin Scorcese presents the Blues: Muddy Waters.

I agree about the Stevie Wonder Keith. I have got the one they have done but he was in a real purple patch just then and the other albums would be great to have.

iTunes classifies the Buddy Holly album as country!

does anybody know which remasters are being used for the led zeppelin shm cds ? as i understand they are saying the 1994 remasters are to be used, but i cannot think that they will not use the jimmy page /george marino remasters .

I've not heard them, but I've only read negative comments Keith.
If the commentators are right surely they won't be used?
Posted on: 07 September 2008 by ewemon
Sure I read somewhere John that they are the ones they will be using. However they ain't as bad as everyone is saying. Personally they are not my cup of tea but I know a lot of folk who love them.
Posted on: 07 September 2008 by ewemon
I have now read that they are supposed to be using the 2003/04 Japanese remaster that were in the paper sleeves.

But don't know for sure.

Well just had an email from cdjapan saying that my box set has shipped, so we shall all know soon enough!

The text on the individual disc releases state the 1994 remasters are used.

According to hmv.co.jp, the entire Jackson Browne back catalogue is to be released on SHM on 12/11/08, in cardboard sleeve versions.

Quite so! It would be rude not to!

Talking of HMV jp, I received a package with 6 albums in it yesterday which came via courier rather than post or parcel. Obviously sailed through without a second glance from HMRC. Some tasty blues titles (Freddie King, Little Walter, Bo Diddley, BB King, Howlin' Wolf) and the Mamas and the Papas "Gold" compilation. Since 2 were doubles that's actually 8 cds!

So another successful day at HMRC for music fans!
Let's hope customs are better at detecting the nasty stuff.

HMV Japan have quite a few SHM discs in a buy 2 discs cheaper price sale. You have to go through a lot of stuff before you may find.

I have seen Police, Hendrix, Stones, Allman Bros so far.

I just received my order of the mini-replica LED ZEPPELIN-CDs....fantastic.
