just received my shm cds from japan , free fire and water and cream disraeli gears.first free ,this was different from the british pressing, it sounded like it had been remixed which it had not been guitars sounded easier to follow and drumming clearer .the cream cd was not the new deluxe remaster but the first remaster which i thought was better , again the sound was good with the group easier to follow .these are not impressive cd more natural.has anybody else got any different titles on shms cds

I did try Google 1st Red Face

That was the last set of ABKO Stones releases. There was a SACD issue and a DSD issue of the same discs.

Super High Material CD. Some remastered, some not. New plastic gives better performance.

If you put shm cd into google you should see a thread from stevehoffman.tv. which explains more.

Amazon.com sell 'em.
If you trawl through this thread & your good bad experiences with cd/vinyl suppliers & cheapest japan import c.ds you'll find various shopping opportunities Smile

Careful. When all that differs is the plastic I have yet to hear an improvement.

Technology developed by JVC, but non JVC releases appearing.
I haven't yet been able to compare a good CD against its' SHM rival.

Go straight to the most overrated acts thread Steve! Winker

I own the Original Exodus CD release (Tuff Gong mastered by Barry Diament), & I have the MFSL GOLD. I have the SHM Exodus CD on order, so I'll compare the versions with maximum Rasta vibes when it arrives Cool

regards the rolling stones shm cdlet it bleed, i did compare with the hybrid sacd ,standard layer, so there might be a slight disadvantage for the standard release, due to the two layers , but when compared the standard disc now sounds flat in comparison. i also have aja by steely dan which sounds pretty good but do not have a disc to compare against .

You mean the "I don't like - therefore they are over-rated" thread?

No fear. The negativity might be catching.

I'm sure you will find a suitable disc. I'm tempted to give one other disc a try. The Argus CD I have could be better.

Peter,

See my earlier post about the Dire Straits disc. I could here no change when the only difference was the disc manufacture. Other discs have different mastering, I intend to try one of those but that to me is no different to a remasters type situation.

I'm still waiting for my Exodus SHM CD.

Yesterday I received T Rex Electric Warrior SHM CD. I don't have the non-SHM disc to compare, but there are tracks on this which I have on standard CDs. The SHM ver' is much better, rather like the diff' between a standard CD compared to a Mobile Fidelity Gold.
But as this SHM CD is remastered all the improvement could be in the remastering.

Here are scans from a booklet that came with the SHM CD, which I think helps clarify what it's all about ...

I have received three John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers SHM CDs ...

A Hard Road

Crusade

Blues From Laurel Canyon
All three remastered from the original master tapes by Paschal Byrne

I compared them to ...

A Hard Road - London 1987 - 820 474-2 CD
Made in W Germany

Crusade - Deram 1987 - 820 537-2 CD
Remastered by Anthony Hawkins
Made in W Germany

Blues From Laurel Canyon
Deram 1989 - 820 539-2 CD
Remastered by Anthony Hawkins
Made in W Germany

Similar conclusion to my T Rex SHM post.
More detail & fidelity.
Separation/soundstage much improved.
Again as the SHM CDs are remasters could all be down to that.
Also lots of bonus tracks (24 in total for these three CDs).

I like these so much I've just ordered two more ...

John Mayall Plays John Mayall

Still waiting for Exodus ... Roll Eyes

The HMV Japan site says that there was 50 titles released last month and they are all sold out.
Posted on: 29 February 2008 by 555
They are proving popular & not just with me.
Plenty still available in various other retail outlets ...

Haven't heard any yet myself but am reluctant to lash out the readies in case they turn out to be like modern remasters which I rushed out to buy thinking they were going to be great only to find that they make my ears bleed.

I know what you mean ewemon.

I've been torn between risking my hard earned £ & being unhappy with the quality, or "missing the boat" & then having to pay lots more once they are OOP!

Drop me a line ewemon (my email's in biog') - I might be able to help ya!

I got an original copy of Let it Bleed of eBay last week for sweeties and it sounds great. It was made pre ABKCO.

I have the MFSL AJA which isn't that good and a couple of copies of the Steve Hoffman mastering which sounds just beautiful. The Hoffman ones can usually be found for a few quid.

ewemon, if you like the that edition you got a treat in store if you can hear the shm edition. i thought the dsd master could not be beat but i was wrong hear it if you can .
