XLD settings for Uniti

Posted by: Paul Hannan on 27 October 2009

Hi

I have recently purchased a Uniti and am using XLD for rips. Its very easy to use on a Mac, however I'd like to see if the settings I'm using are optimal. I've followed the settings described in http://jungle.sk/XLD_Tutorial/ however I'm not sure if others are setting it up the same way e.g. compression settings. I'd be very interested to hear what others are doing. Thanks

FLAC is probably the best way to go as compression is no longer an issue.

There is also settings for import and eject CD.

Also in the format file name stick this in:

%a/%T/%n %t

Paul,

Welcome!

I would follow that set-up guide to the letter. I glanced over it and I wouldn't do anything differently.

As long as you are defeating the use of cache, and correcting your offset, you are 95% there.

Enjoy your FLAC rips.....

Others will disagree, but I think it matters not the level of compression you use for the FLAC encoding.

Hydrogenaudio will be your friend to get the skinny on any possible SQ differences between the two, or lack thereof.

I dont even remember how I have set-up EAC to encode the FLAC regarding "level". I just dont worry about it....

Lastly, regarding your file output naming scheme, do whatever works best for you. I prefer:
Artist - Album - Track No. - Title

With that you can always reconstruct things if something horrible happens and you are left with only files and no directory structure.

I do definitely recommend you use the track number though. Some players use this as a method of determining song order in a playlist.

Some have reported optimum results with FLAC setting at '0'. Others not so much but for about a 3% difference in storage, why not?

JS and Paul,

I currently have mine set for 5 in my command line in EAC.... i just checked. Not sure how or why or even if I did, set this.

I was almost sure it was set to 8.... maybe it was at some point. I set-up EAC years ago and have never had to even look at the settings that I can clearly recall.

In any case, and for what its worth, Josh Coalson (sp), amongst others, states in his flatfrontend readme "level 5 is best AND recommended" no one explains how or why.

I will try 0 for a while, it cant hurt. I personally cant hear those types of differences on my kit. But JS is totally right that 3% and the chance it sounds better to someone is surely worth the investment.

Going to all WAV files? I cannot say that is worth the gamble for me. I cannot hear a difference between ANY lossless formats.

If just starting out I would probably use 0 as JS recommends. Why not?

I forgot to correct the above suggestion.... then it was too late.

I think its best in general to name the file:

"Track No - Artist - Track title"

%n - %a - %t

or

"Track No - Artist - Album - Track title"

%n - %a - %c - %t

This way your album folders will stay well organized.

thanks for your comments guys! Can i just confirm to be clear, that the suggestion is to set XLD FLAC compression to 'Low' with a padding of 4KB??? Cheers

I always use High compression (level=8), saves space and decompression has never been an issue.

I would leave padding to its 4K default. It doesn't really matter, it just saves some time when you want to add/edit metadata at a later date.

Paul,

The higher the level the longer the encoding takes, and the smaller the resulting file is.

If I were you, I would take JS's advice and rip to level 0.

Higher level are just not that much smaller.

But then again, I wouldn't lose sleep over using any level of compression. I would bet they all sound identical to you..... along with WAV and ALAC.

thanks all. Not too worried about file size, just want to be sure that when I set this up initially I can rip away without the need to do any again!

Then follow the guide you posted above, set FLAC compression to 0 and rip away!!!

Enjoy the music!

Paul,

What else are you using with the uniti? Speakers? Storage? Computer? Naca?

Kef reference model 2's (about 8 years old!) Storage currently on a MAc but moving to a Netgear or Buffalo NAS. The Uniti has a fair go at driving the speakers but will probably add a power amp in a while (I knew this would get expensive!!!) Smile

Paul,

Are you using Naim's NACA speaker cable? Are you simply going out from the mini with toslink into the Uniti? Or are you streaming?

That's what I did. After a couple of weeks I had the impression my system with Uniti and Audioplan Kontrast could have some more punch and I purchased a NAP 200. I would do it again any time. While the Uniti is really sounding good, everything improves with a poweramp. So go for it (or if you can afford it take a NAP 250).

Its definitely going to get very expensive!!! I think the 200 would be ideal for my use. I do get the feeling it could do with a bit more control on bass output in particular. The Uniti has a wonderful sound stage and just needs a little more grunt.

PCS, I'm using Twonky as the UPnP server and just controlling via the Naim control. Worked absolutely seemlessly
