Greatest debut al*** of all time

Posted by: Premmyboy on 01 January 2010

Hi There, A bit of fun to start the new year. To qualify it has to be great obviously but also that particular artists best release also.

For example Led Zeppelin's first album would not qualify cos Zeppelin 2 is better!! IMO anyway!!

Some to start with,

Marquee Moon, Television
NMTB Sex Pistols
Velvet Underground & Nico
Cabretta Mink Deville
Definitely Maybe Oasis
Stone Roses
Roxy Music (debateable For Your Pleasure arguably better).

Prem.

Perhaps not the greatest EVER debut album, but a really good one

Or perhaps this is more of a contender...

Great album but unfortunately not her first. That was Live Tape which turned into Live 88 when re-released.

Yeah Ewen I knew that. Live Tape was apparently sold by Shawn at her gigs and was commercially released as Live 88 six years after Steady On. Whatever, they're both great albums.

Stating the obvious, tho it was bettered each step of the way.

Some great debut albums name-checked already.

A couple not mentioned so far, that for me also meet the test of being unsurpassed (although perhaps equalled) by later releases are

The Optimist LP - Turin Brakes
The Allman Brothers Band

They are so good, I really wish they were from Manchester, lol! I'm pinning my hopes on Delphic this year (good review in the Grauniad today)

(Strummer/Jones)

Back in the garage with my bullshit detector
Carbon monoxide making sure it's effective
People ringing up making offers for my life
But I just wanna stay in the garage all night

We're a garage band
We come from garageland

Meanwhile things are hotting up in the West End alright
Contracts in the offices, groups in the night
My bummin' slummin' friends have all got new boots
An' someone just asked me if the group would wear suits

I don't wanna hear about what the rich are doing
I don't wanna go to where the rich are going
They think they're so clever, they think they're so right
But the truth is only known by guttersnipes

There's twenty-two singers! But one microphone
Back in the garage
There's five guitar players! But one guitar
Back in the garage
Complaints! Complaints! Wot an old bag
Back in the garage
All night

Mind you they did only make the one album.

Blimey Howard, that's a blast from the past. They played in a rather dubious rock gospel play at my school in about 1975! There was actually an album of the play released, so technically they made two albums!

A Christ's Hospital old boy eh?

Cain was only available to parents/teachers so one could argue not a general release, therefore Vistor 2035 was their only album.

I wasn't at the school, although my mother always wanted me to go.
How did you get on with the uniform?

My mate Ray (Deefholts) was a band member, that's how I know all about it.

It's not a bad album , funky , jazzy sort of stuff.
Unlikely you've heard of it, not sure how many 10s of copies they sold. Smile

Still come up from time to time I'll play it to you one of these days , or I might even try a needle drop. in Garageband.

Dressing like a penguin does something for a boy's character. Probably not in a good way though!

You have a better memory than me - I'd forgotten it was called Cain.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this 80s gem. It all went downhill from here...
