Recordings of Orchestral rehearsals

Posted by: David Sutton on 25 November 2007

A friend of mine loaned me 2 CDs of Bruno Walter rehearsals (of Beethoven and Mozart). Although they are very old (late 1950s) the listening is quite an experience. So I set about trying to find copies for myself.

I eventually found the Beethoven on Amazon for GBP45, secondhand, and bought on an impulse. I have also now found the rare Walter rehearsal of Mahler 9. This is in the post (I hope) and I will be able to comment further once I have it.

However, is anyone aware of other recordings of rehearsals? The Walter rehearsal of Beethoven (4,5,7 and 9) is a gem.

There is a recording of Elgar leading the LSO in 1927 in the first part of the Scherzo from his Second Symphony. Incredible actually, and a powerful corrective to those who read the score as an engineering "blueprint!"

Equally fascinating is to listen to Furtwangler being anything but bad tempered in Stockholm in the Third Leonore Overture where the Orchestra makes some terrible mistakes. His sole tool of gathering strength was the use of the pregnant pause after he stopped the band!

Both issued and no longer available from EMI.

This can be found on PFM:

Beethoven / Karajan – Karajan In Rehearsal, DGG ‘tulip’, gatefold sleeve and 20 page booklet. This is a 1968 special promo type thing connected to Karajan’s legendary 60s Beethoven cycle and is a recording of Herbie Von K shouting things in German at the BPO whilst they get their heads round the 9th – there is a full English translation of what he’s saying in the booklet. It is a very interesting thing as it gives an indication of the preparation for a performance that goes on behind the scenes. This copy grades at VG++ for the cover and book and between EX and NM for the vinyl which sounds truly superb (better than the finished article IMHO!) £4.50.
