I liked the footage of his early material, but was disappointed by the more poppy stuff with the band - seem a bit too Later with Jools Holland, but that version of Solid Air was fantastic - for me John was at his best when his mate Danny Thompson, probably the best bass player around, was by his side. A great artist nonetheless.

Nik Bartsch's Ronin - Stoa
Saw them live yesterday and thought they were great. Picked up this album as a sampler, but I can see I will be dipping into the piggy bank for more. In many ways they defy categorization , but they make a great pulsating rhythmical sound, quite hypnotic.
Regards
Nic

Nic - the next album on ECM by Nik Bartsch Holon is excellent as well. I bought all his pre ECM back catalogue from the show - another 6 CD's and they are very good indeed - they are available from his website.

What do you think of it? I do like the clarity on the Brendan O'Brian's production 'Ten Redux'.
Haven't set up the vinyl deck to try the live album yet.

Lontano,
Thanks, I realised when I got home that the stuff they had been playing was from the later album Holon, which I will definitely get as well . Relentless looping rhythms, certainly had me bopping around looking daft.
Some strange looking instruments they had on stage, the 8 string bass, the tallest sax/clarinet I have ever seen, the percussion "wok" and the other percussion piece that looked like something made by a deranged person in their metalwork class. All made sense aurally, just looked a bit odd and mysterious.
Regards
Nic
Now the earlier trio
Marcin Wasilewski Trio - January
