Hi Adrian, good to finally meet you at the weekend. I just got back, and I'm sure you won't be surprised to hear, I bought this very CD, along with John Taylor's new solo piano disk. Then I went a bit mad and bought the Brilliant box set of Bach's complete works - 155 CDs for the amazing sale price of £40 from Oxford Street HMV. Too good to miss, but hard work lugging it all the way back to Sheffield. Not to mention the Bartsch CDs and a couple of others from Ray's Records. A very costly, but enjoyable weekend!
Regards
Nigel

Sonny Rollins, The Cutting Edge
Sonny live at Montreux Jazz Festival '74. I've just discovered that one can play jazz with bagpipes, thanks to Rufus Harley on Swing Low, Sweet Chariot! Amazing!

I think I am seeing him with Alela Diane tomorrow night. Any good?
Diccus
Hi Diccus,
Here's a brief review of his latest album Animals In The Dark. It's not exactly jolly stuff but today was only my first listen and I quite enjoyed it. I can imagine him being good live. If not, you have the bonus of Alela Diane to compensate. Enjoy the show, and let me know how they both performed.

Good to meet you as well Nigel and I really enjoyed the evening. I thought Bartsch was outstanding and I now would like to see him again and hopefully the sound mix would be a little better as well. He asked me my opinion on the show when I was chatting with him after so I told him I could not hear his piano properly! He was a really decent guy and happy to chat for a while.
A few posters are in the post - could be with you in the morning.
Good luck getting through the Bach. I played this on my ipod this morning. I'll be interested to hear your opinion on the Wollny. Sounded good on my first listen.
Cheers

Three absolute pearls there Mark. I've not heard much bellowhead, but I like that horns and folk combo thingy.

These recordings were part of my basic listening some 25 years ago. In between I have transcribed them to CD, and they wear well.
Yes, and much as i admire all the performer on this set, i noticed that the final LP is Helmut Walcha, they saved the best for last! : )
nymph
I used to own these LPs as individual items, and I do not know the precise contents of the box. Which Walcha recordings did DG put into the box?
Playing now! : )
Helmut Walcha ~
'Side 9' ~
~<>~ Dietrich Buxtehude (1637-1707) ~<>~
Praludium und Fuge g-moll, Bux WV 149 ... 7:43
Praludium und Fuge D-dur, Bux WV 139 ... 5:52
Praludium und Fuge fis-mol, Bux WV 146 ... 7:36
Praludium und Fuge E-dur, Bux WV 141 ... 6:37
an der Arp-Schnitger-Orgel in Cappel
(recordings from 1978)
'Side 10' ~
~<>~ Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) ~<>~
1. Toccata und Fuge d-mol, BWV 565 ... 9:17
2. Toccata und Fuge F-dur. BWV 540 ... 15:02
an der Franz Casper Schnitger Orgel
der St. Laurenskerk in Alkmaar
(recordings from 1963)
Side9 & 10 record number ~ 2564 186 (DG Archiv Produktion)
On the kitchen scales it looks like 140gm vinyl(?)a bit light weight but no matter. I'm very pleased with this box-set, must be about 30 years old now but in almost mint condition and they play very well : )
regards ~
