Spikes on Ikea cabinets
Posted by: Shayman on 03 December 2002
Hello All
I have a friend with a hifi supported on two Ikea 3 shelf cabinets (Lack type wood for those in the know about all things Ikea) and I reckon it looks pretty good.
However, I can't imagine the plastic castors that come with the units do a lot for the musicallity of the system. I was wondering if anyone had any experience of replacing the castors with spikes on such furniture and whether this would be OK for a naim system? Would it completely deaden the sound? I know it'll be no match for an expensive rack but I prefer my system to fit in with the rest of our room and be pretty discreet.
Any thoughts/experience would be gratefully received.

Hello Jonathan, replacing the castors with spikes should give you a more stable support and improve sound quality Give it a try you have nothing to loose.
6mm spikes should be okay.

Alan,
I presume that was a Lack table - how are you supporting the middle shelf and how come you have the lack sitting on top of what looks like the top from another lack?
This is of interest - I have a spare lack and a lot of DVD player/processor stuff which needs a rack and I might be a bit broke to take my wife's preferred route of another Ash designs 5 tier to match my existing one.
Further info please...

Tom is right. I to used a platform system designed by Vuk commonly referred to as the Vukwich.
It is cheap and surprisingly effective.
However, like Tom, I went down the Hutter route.

2x Corras bought at weekend and Tenderfeet on order.
I'll try and post a picture/report when its done. Thinking along the lines of mounting one Corras on the other. I'll see how easy that is. I'll probably need a shelf or two more however which will probably be hard to come by as Ikea don't sell these separately.

I made one of these about five years ago and still use it for my office system.
The advantages are that the number of shelves and their spacing can be easily altered to accomodate different types of gear.
The point of this support is that it is not rigid in the horizontal plane as the shelves are supported on neoprene washers and not tightened down. This causes some swaying in the breeze effects when buttons are pushed.
I think the sound is outstanding, easily bettering my Quadraspire, but it looks hideous. When I have time I plan to pretty-up the shelves with a router.
I don't believe this stand has anything remotely to do with Vuk.
