42,5 Vs. 72
Posted by: Simo on 17 November 2003
last week i get a 42,5/90.3 and i was very surprised by the sound of hicapped 42,5, more music, natural presentation and 3d sound and at first listen impression, all my friend (music players) prefere the 42,5 to the 72! I'm not too desagree with them...
I start to think that old Naim is my prefered taste
the match goes on.........

That's just silly. The 72 is obviously better in every possible way. If you've heard a 72 sound worse than a 42.5, then the 72 is broken!

My experience differs slightly from Mike Hanson's, though I'm unclear on the comparison.
A 42.5/hi will sound better to most music lovers than a bare 72 on most source material.
A bare 72 will cound better than a 42.5/hi a the very best material, but who can limit listening to only the very best source (ie. vinyl or broadcast)?
OTOH, an ice cold 72/hi is in a much higher league than even a well-broken in 42.5/hi. If that's not what you hear, either the 72 or the hi is malfunctioning
Regards.

at the end of the listening test the 72 is the winner, but the 42,5 in my system was a surprise for the price.
thanks all

I didn't get the impression that the 72 was sans Hi-Cap. If so, then I would also be less incredulous. A 72 without a Hi-Cap can, indeed, sound a bit thin and ragged. Hi-Caps do a great job of putting it all together.

Right, Mike...I, too, suspected the comparison was 72/hi to 42.5/hi, but then the results are so surprising that I tought maybe it was 42.5/hi to bare 72.
