best blu ray player - 2ch audio
Posted by: Fozz on 06 March 2009
Is anyone using a blu ray player with just 2ch audio output? I am thinking of getting one and need a vote for one with the best 2ch audio, preferably on phono so a hiline could be used.
I am not bothered about any disk features other than the movie so version 1.1, 2.0 etc. I don't think matters.
many thanks, fozz

Audio quality from Pioneer BD players such as the LX-71 is highly regarded. Better than the Panasonic BD550 or Sony BDPS550, but a fair bit more expensive.

why not wait for the naim dac? then you could get away with any player you want and also know you've got the best 2 channel sound available.

Fozz, does your budget extend to £2K plus cost of BD player?

Hi guys, the Naim DAC idea I had not thought about so it may be get any half decent player now and get that later. presume the Blu ray would put out 2 channel PCM for that and not a case of 5.1 being downmixed by the DAC. hmmm.
ideally not more than £500 for the player but if really exceptional I would pay more.

I use a Panasonic BD-30 into a Supernait dac.
a dac will not downmix 5.1 to 2.0. When PCM is selected for the digital audio ouput on the Panasonic, the coax digital output is downmixed 2 channel, that may be the case on other BD players but I'm not sure.

i have been using a pioneer elite BDH94 as my video and audio cd source for about 1.5 years with good results (2 channel audio as good as naim cd5i to my ears).
one word of warning. due to a software fault, the unit locks up from time to time. when this happens, you have to unplug it, then re-plug it.

have done a bit of research and the bdp-51FD from pioneer is supposed to be pretty close to the LX model. that and a dac I think may be the way to go. thanks a lot.
just a case of checking that a downmix to 2 channel PCM is available on the digital output.

I use the Sony PS3 into the Supernait's DAC. The sound is great with movies and music. Oppo is also about to release a bluray player that plays SACD's as well.
Now if we could only get that Naim DAC with an hdmi input for high res audio!

Went for the Pioneer model in the end BDPLX08. The slim box option of the BDPLX71 which I think has a minimal look and goes well with Naim Boxes.
Not really burned in yet but the sound is very promising: Coherent and clear, good detail levels, decent bass and above all a fair dab of musical timing. Much better than an entry level Panasonic I had tried a while ago.
Options remain open for adding a DAC later obviously, but I see it has the kettle mains lead (oh no..... how to get nagged by powerline thought AGAIN).
oh and while I have chance to say it: it is such a shame that the Naim dac is not half width shoe box!
