Naim Dac - USB Stick doesn't work!!
Posted by: STJimmy on 21 April 2010
Having plugged in a Toshiba USB memory stick into USB port of NDAC, Dac was docked at once and the light on the stick started to flash, everything seems ok, but when I pressed "Play" the Dac kept standing at "Stop". No music, no sound. Could anyone help??!!

The USB playback is very picky, and sometimes you have to be persistent and pull it out and back in, and push the buttons a few more times.
The following are essential to avoid confusing the USB playback:
- Make sure the music files are all WAV files
- Make sure that there are no other files
- Make sure that there is either only one folder with the WAV files in it, or store all WAV files in the root folder

FYI,
I havent seen this documented, but I can state that the USB input works for at least MP3 in addition to WAV from an iPhone. Not sure about a memory stick though.

It's WAV-only from a USB-stick. nDAC cannot play any other formats from USB-stick.
Other formats can only be played from an iPod/iPhone, as Patrick says, where it is the iPod/iPhone that does the actual playing of the audio file and sends the output to the nDAC.
And in my experience you don't have to be so strict as JYOW say about organising the WAV's on the stick. I have several albums on my stick each in its own directory and I have also used subdirectories within those just for the test and I also had a few non-audio files on it also just for the test.
But it doesn't do any harm to begin as JYOW to keep it easy to start with. If it is an 'older' stick and you don't have to keep the data on it, you might try reformatting it as FAT32.

Now it is working after the following steps:
- reformat the stick
- rip the music by itune into WAV files
- copy the WAV files into the stick.
Surprisingly, the performance of usb stick is close to cd5xs, though the obvious choice for me is cdxs, but in terms of $$$, the usb stick is a sure winner!!!

Hello,
It is strange because of here : http://www.naimaudio.com/userf..._2009-10_english.pdf
In page 20 we can read that any naim product with USB should play FLAC. So nDAC too, isn't it ?

Unfortunately not. WAV only.

Many report USB playback is better than any connected source. It completely removes the SPDIF issues of coax, optical or BNC.
I've had a quick play with USB and it sounded better than the equivalent file played via SPDIF. However, I couldn't live with the PITA user interface. For me it offers no benefit over CD in terms of hassle factor. Streaming via dac is very convenient. If I want hassle I'll play CDs on the CD555

agreed.
Unless you have something at a higher freq rate than 192, it has little use.

You are mistaken Graham. They are both bit perfect, they sound the same...cont p94.

Hi,
On the Uniti you can play FLAC, MP3, MPEG-4, WAV etc on the USB. I thought the DAC was basically just a larger version of the system in the Uniti?
It does get a bit finicky though. every now and then whilst playing a file the USB will re-initalise.
FLAC on USB sounds just as good as CD..

No, the DAC is very different from the Uniti. Nothing similar.
