Iphone OS 4.2 and NDAC issues

Posted by: vandergraafuk on 28 November 2010

I was curious if anyone else has noticed that when you plug your iphone into the NDAC up pops a message on the Iphone that this device is not supported. At this point you can't play any music, the only way to get it to work is reboot the phone. It worked flawlessly under 4.1 except for the additional noise artifacts. Confused

That's correct, throw it into Airplane Mode and see what happens....

Sent these e-mails to Steven Hopkins last week. Still waiting for a reply.

1st e-mail
To rid myself of the crackling sound/docking problems with 4.1 I have updated my 3rd gen. i-pod Touch soft/firmware with 4.2.
At first glance it appears to have cured the sound issue, but introduced others.

1. In order for the Touch to dock and the nDAC to read the music files successfully it seems to require the Touch be switch off completely before attaching to the nDAC.
The Touch powers up and files are played, though not docking as effortlessly as 4.0 did.

2. When playing commences the Touch assumes a battery charging status. When I press the dock for 1 second to disable charging ( as per Naim manual), the Touch undocks
When I press the dock button again I get the following message "This accessory is not supported by iPod Touch."
In order to successfully re-dock I have to remove the Touch from the Apple docking cable and power it down completely. Returning to step one is required to resume
successful connection.
I haven't investigated any other quirks as yet,but I'm sure your R&D team will be onto it now that 4.2 has been released.

2nd e-mail

I have done an i-pod restore even to the extent of "as a new i-pod". The situations in my previous e-mail remain.
If anything the problem is even worse in that step 1. is not always successful. One successful dock in about 10 attempts so far.
The dock light always comes on when the i-pod powers up, there is a bleep as if the devices are trying to communicate, but I get the "This accessory is not supported by iPod Touch."
The i-pod continues to bleep but the music files don't play. Very frustrating and exceedingly disappointing.
Same problem with both USB ports. Has this problem been replicated? What next?

P.S. I have subsequently found that when I can get my Touch to play through the n-DAC there are still some noise artifacts that resemble that of a vinyl record being played with occasional clicks. Not as bad as with 4.1 but still distracting.

NOTHING!

Come on Apple/Naim; where are we going with this.
The situation is becoming evermore ridiculous?!

Not to be unhelpful, but I have the EXACT same unit, without having any issues under 4.2 (fresh restore of 4.2.1 build 8C148)–are you running more than one audio app in the background?

Is the device jailbroken?

Dave ,
Are you addressing this to me or Vandergraafuk?

Checked on my settings and I am running version 4.2.1(8C148).
Mine's an i-Touch 3rd gen. device, not i-Phone4, so I don't think "jailbroken" applies.

Your comment to Vandergraafuk's initial query suggests you also had experience of these problems.

Some feedback from Naim would be helpful.

My device is not Jailbroken. I think that this is really more of a Apple issue rather than Naim. Obviously Apple can make any changes they like and break third party hardware that have the Apple authentication logo. It would be nice if Naim could either confirm or deny the current issue. Cant see how a restore will fix this problem. When you update your firmware the phone/ipod is wiped/formatted and a new file system is rewritten back.If it is just me then I am a Computer User Non Technical. Big Grin

I agree with all that you've said.
Looking on the Apple support forum it seems that docking is a problem after the 4.2 upgrade with other 3rd party devices .
It is a pity that Naim have remained silent on this problem particularly since Steven Hopkins has
been asking us to " watch this space " since mid September with no further comment since.( see his 4.1 update problems post)

Can one of the moderators please explain why Steven Hopkin's post on i-phone 4.1 update problems has been removed.
We were asked to "Watch this space".
How can we when the thread has been removed.
Has there been a development?
This plus the total silence on both Apple iOS4.1 and 4.2 upgrade issues is really beginning to frustrate me.
I know the problems are not of Naim's making, but please give us the courtesy of an explanation.

I know that silence can be frustrating but I would imagine that they have to replicate the fault then ensure that their software is not causing the issue then present findings to Apple. I can imagine they are not really bothered as they are probably being bombarded with other 3rd party hardware/software suppliers. I suppose we will have to wait and see. Kind Regards

Vandergraafuk,
Thanks for showing some interest on this topic.
When one loses functionality of a product even though not of their making Naim ought to give some feedback.
At least there was some response from them on the 4.1 update issue. Without any how does one know where the
problem lies with these sudden and unexpected events.
Anyway, I've banged on enough about this. I await with patience a reply to my second direct e-mail to Steven Hopkins.(dated 25/11)

Regards,
Graham
P.S. Hope he's reading thread.
