Would there be this much attention if she had lived on a council estate?

Oldie, As a teenager I regularly visted pubs in the East End, where the Krays were hero worshipped (with many a picture on the walls, some still there I believe) and sometimes those very same pubs, collected of a weekend evening (quite openly) for the cause (otherwise known as the IRA) which at the time wasn't illegal. I get what you're saying, but as one person brought up in the East End of London, and knowing many of it's pubs in early days (and it's characters, even at my age) I think I can say I know what I'm talking about from personal experience my old cocker. I'll say again, the protection code generally in those area's ensured safety for the average punter (99%) on the streets, like it or not.

Graham,
I think our only difference is about definitions,I accept that the Krays were welcomed with open arms by mostin the East End, but that was only, and this included my friend and his family because they didn't want a good beating or the favourite kray trick of being bent over a table and having their buttocks slashed with a open razor[every time one moved it opened up the wounds] No they were certainly not the mythical Robbin hoods of the twentieth century, more like just robbin ba---rds.Just as an ademdum, the Krays and some of thier underlings were Wedding guests at my "PAL'S" Wedding, but that didn't stop some of the others in the group breaking into my mates flat and pinching all of the Wedding gifts, honor amoungst thieves, not that lot, did my mate a lot of good though as he never had anything to do with any of them at all after that incident.
I also whilst visiting the "Black Cat" in Kilburn dipped into my pocket when the "BUCKET" was shaken at me by the local IRA Supporters, both our East End friends and I thought it far better for both my wife's and my health to cough up ten bob than get a good kicking, apart from the fact that,I believed then as I still do in a united Ireland, [so hopefully the ten bob was used for peaceful use] but then, asI still do to this day, not in the IRA'S way of acheiveing it.
As for the seagulls I could ,I supose make some gag about Seagull sh-t, but I have to admitt that I know less about football,or I'm less intersted in football ,than I know about politics and
[ BEFORE Mick adds his contribution, thank you Mick]as you know, thats not much!!

To go back to the original topic
If Dog bites man - no news
If Man bites Dog - big news
The only way Dog bites man becomes news is when dog is huge and fierce and man is a small child or a fragile person
Actually on BBC Southern news the "behaviour" of Brighton's best are reported with boring regularity.

Adam, turn off your computer and turn on the TV.
My original question was somewhat ingenuous – an objection to the intimacy that certain stories have impressed upon them by a partial news media.
The question “Would there be this much attention if she had lived on a council estate?” is worth considering but my question is “Would there be this much attention if there was not an election taking place?”
I take in my news from Radio 4 and the weekend papers – perhaps I have missed out on the ersatz concern that immersion in television news seems to promote.
I don’t necessarily think I am missing something here and do not feel impelled to follow the advice “Adam, turn off your computer and turn on the TV.”

The world is split into "us" and "them". It always has been and probably always will be.
Not a day passes when we don't make decisions on the importance of a particular subject matter based on the closeness of the connection to ourselves, our class, our status, our neighbourhood, our race or our country. Or even in this case how attractive they were (or were not). Don't we all love to hate a scruffy, skinhead "perp" glaring angrily into the camera on the TV News as he is lead into court to get his "just desserts" for hurting a pretty girl?
No doubt if we eventually heard about an alien race having a hard time we would quickly adjust our degree of sensitivity to their plight. Depending on how likeable they are, their appearance, behaviour, manners, colour, etc.etc.
All this has been happening throughout history. I have little doubt that random agressive attacks happened under communism just as much as under capitalism.
Young men are by far the most agressive of individuals. I remember random threats and the endless fights at dances, pubs and parties. The odd thing was that "suits" fought in the towns and "denims" fought in the rural towns and villages. Without exception the fights were between young men. But that didn't exclude aggressive behaviour towards girls and frequent random assaults. Sometimes in public.
There were always city roads and streets which were mentioned as being no-go areas for the police, unless travelling in groups. These were always pre-60's stories and probably much older than that. They were always desperately poverty-stricken areas close to much wealthier neighbourhoods.
What has changed is the wealth (poor word) of news, trivial and otherwise, which we are endlessly bombarded with.[s.inf.] There is always an attack somewhere to be reported in gory detail across the whole range of reporting media. Which otherwise would have gone quite unnoticed in an earlier, more parochial, time.
There was an advertising poster for a weekly newspaper outside the shops recently. Claiming that 290,000 Danish children each year see their mothers being beaten up by their fathers. One presumes that doesn't include the fathers who beat up their wives in private?
All things are relative?
I think that's enough simplistic clichés for one post, don't you?

A few days ago in this case, police said they'd arrested two people who'd voluntarily turned up at the station. Since then one of them (femail) has been released and cleared of any connection with the incident publically. The remaining person (male) one wouild assume has been charged with 'something' as he's still apparently in custody, and no further information has been released about his situation. Somebody starngely put it to me last night that 'maybe this incident in reality didn't actually happen ?' which I personally finf ludicrous & conspiritorially minded. It has been announced within the last hour that police have arrested a 'Travellor/ Gypsy' from London who could well be their man, and they seem 'confident'. This may well be the case, and it could well be the bastard, but I can't in all honesty ignore the timing and convenience this will have for vertain members of the electorate & Candidates alike ?

Yes, after the election I expect an announcement from the police - "sorry chaps but it seems we've got the wrong man"
