Dear Mike,

Strangely prefigured here from a few minutes ago!

After last year's wonderous celebrations, I am eschewing the chance of being in the company of my delightful niece and nephew, to whom I sent simple but nice gifts! No doubt too simple for what they seem to expect!

I feel sorry for my sister in law, however! Under the circumstances she needs all the moral support she can get with the two little [17 and 18 year old] darlings!

I am not necessarily wholely enthusiastic for the old maxim of "spare the rod and spoil the child," but in the case of these two ... well let's just call them indulged and "going through a phase!"

We seem to be back to 4 for Christmas dinner as my daughter and her friend managed to loose/get stolen their passports on the way down to Portsmouth, so no trip to France for Noël.

Just a slow preparation of the turkey and a lounging rest on the day.
Our family Christmas day is January 4th, the only date that coincides shifts and away footie matches.

Christmas meal in the evening when my son gets back from his 12 hour shift at a certain Heathrow car rental agency at about 6p.m.

One advantage of working at a non airport branch, they don't open Christmas day.
Who does he work for is it a national one , an enterprising one or for MR (D)avis or does it hurt? I bet I've missed it !

At home tomorrow and then away being basted by the glow of my father-in-law's new 50" TV for Boxing day.

Eldest daughter back from university, loads of family etc. And a bottle or two to wash down Mrs Fender's fantastic food.

Bike ride with my wife. We are deeply anti-social at Xmas. We do not give each other presents, decorate the house or really do anytthing much. We'll cook a nice meal for ourselves and maybe meet up with some friends at the weekend.

Generally we'll have four days of peace and solitude.

I should point out we do not have kids, and my wife is Jewish so my complete avoidance of Xmas has some justification.

Anyway, when is it?

Well it's just just me, my wife and our Daughter (nearly 4) this year. She's at that magical age when she still believes in all the fairy dust of Christmas and is old enough to be excited about it.

The general plan is to get up, uncork some champagne (after acouple of mugs of tea!) Unwrap presents, cook a full English breakfast and then stick the turkey in. Dinner is usually a mid afternoon affair and the bulk of the day is spent playing with my Daughter and trying to find a quiet moment to play a new CD or DVD or thumb through any new books that have arrived.

My wife has expressed a desire to go to the local Church this year but half the time other things get in the way of going and for that reason I prefer to go either before or after the big day.

Wherever you are Merry Christmas to you all,

Jonathan
