Mobile Phone advice please.....

Posted by: long-time-dead on 06 May 2005

It's upgrade time for me ......

I normally only use my mobile phone for calls and texts but all the current phones now seem to feature a camera.

I don't need a PDA or the ability for it to sync with my PC, games or the like.

My attention is beginning to turn to the camera.

Are they all crap or is there one of the current phones that has a decent ability ?

Not particularly brand loyal - so open to suggestion.

TIA

Nice clean car Hawk. When did you find time to wash it? I thought the new black box's would take up all yout time.

LTD Basically the cameras are a gizmo for the trendy young things, with file sizes which are realistic to handle and send from phone to phone. Just pick a phone based on it having sensible size key buttons (some are so small now oldies like me have trouble hitting the right button) and a whatever bands you need for roaming (most are tri-band anyway) forget the camera.

They can also be bloody intrusive², and I often wonder about privacy laws etc, with such missuse of these toys on a regular basis, the video and audio taping aspect as well naturally, innit.

Fritz Von Prince Arry got well buggered by his so called mates dinnee !!! Cool You thgink the police themselves have to 'legally' get permission to tap phones etc !

In this case the camera lies! Its not that clean Winker and i cant claim credit for it when it is!
Still the car has a nice turn of speed to get me home to the smaller more enjoyable black boxes..

My contract is up for renewal too in just over two weeks.

I've got my sights set on the Nokia 6680. It has two, yes TWO built-in cameras.

One is 1.3 megapixel on the rear that should be better than the VGA ones on most phones including the Sony Ericsson K700i and the Nokia 6600 I currently use.

The other is a VGA one on the front for video calling.

Another phone with two such cameras is the Motorola E1000, but for some reason this phone is only available on Vodafone and 3, afaict.

The SE S700i has a very good camera for a phone when the lighting is good. When light fails other mobiles have better results. I just changed from a nokia 6600 and the results are far better. The downsides:

1. The phone is not symbian
2. It wont run opera and has WAP web browsing only.
3. mine would not read my yahoo mail properly via WAP until I changed to the latest firmware on the phone. this involved buying a phone cradle off ebay and re-flashing the firmware in the phone from the SE website.

photo examples here and some of mine have been as good (in good light remember)

Have they got mikes & speakers, can one actually hold o conversation, or is that anti-SMS esque ?

Fritz Von I absolutely hate mobiles and have never (or will never) own one, let alone sign a contract for one, they're known as Handys over here, How wrong can you get, innit Big Grin

Strange how the more phones everybody has, the less actual communication and listening between folk is in reality experienced !!! Frown

Though as an afterthought ! What with the latest British Chavesque craze of beating people up and filming it via the mobile, I can see their attraction as a social tool ! Cool

Gary

Pleasantly surprised by the picture quality - much better than the image shown by John. So much different I now have my doubts as to the origin.........

Food for thought though.

long time, if you pm me an email address I will send over some pics sunday evening, the quality can indeed be as good as those shown and I have some that bonus print have printed that are splendid. Its a good phone too as long
as you get the none-branded firmware. ie dont go go for vodaphone live branded version.

Best wishes

The pictures to which Gary has provided the link (tall building, tap, bin big yellow fire hyrdant(?)) are taken with the s700i - also a 1.3 megapixel camera.

The picture of the black Honda with its slightly blurred edges was taken by the VGA-equipped K700i.

Gary et al.

Just a short note to let you know that I was impressed by the images shown and decided to get the SE s700i.

It is a very nice compact digital camera that also works as a phone !

Image quality is more than acceptable (I will use my D70 for most imaging), build is good and the functionality of the telephone is great.

Elected for 125 anytime cross-network and 250 texts per month for £20. Free phone !

Can't complain....................

LTD,

I see that you are more into texting than calling.

I get 600 mins, 100 texts, free voicemail for £55/month.

I wonder if the S700i is a suitable alternative to the Nokia 6680 given that Orange are yet to announce the launch of the latter.
Posted on: 15 May 2005 by long-time-dead
The bundled texts were a bonus for me. I'm with Vodaphone now and took their "Stop The Clock" option.

Given that call is made within your allowance - any call made for a duration of over 3 and below 60 minutes will be capped at 3 minutes only off your allowance.

Orange don't supply the S700i, neither do T_Mobile..............

LTD;

If you're not bothered about a phone with a camera, the Nokia 3120 from Orange is a bargain at the moment at £35 (inc p&p) if you order it on-line.

I've just bought two of them (one for my mother) and we're both very pleased with the phone.

John.

I guess that's on pay-as-you-go - a very expensive way to run a mobile phone unless you are like my Mum or my Dad.

They each use about £5 worth of credit per month and inherit either my or my sister's contract cast-offs.
