Donaldson was a “player” working for both sides in a political, violent, and psychotic “armed struggle”.
He shouldn’t get a hero’s funeral, as virtually any circumstance in a man's life will make him a hero to some group of people.
He was no doubt deemed a legitimate target, like Eamon Collins was in 1999.
Was Donaldson killed by his comrades in the IRA, INLA, UDA, UDR, and UVF, the RUC or the other side?
The saying once a “Provo always a Provo”, despite whether you renounce violence or not, this village mentality still rules.

Why? The IRA (in which term I include Mr A and Mr McG and Sinn Fein) have been breaking the terms of the cease fire and Good Friday agreement for years. So what is new?
And remember Honest Tony's hand-written pledges to the people of NI " no prisoner releases until all violence stops and all weapons destroyed etc etc" All quietly forgotten when the IRA thought they could blackmail the Govt into more concessions.
The annoying thing is that after years of struggle and as a result of some outstanding intelligence work, we had the IRA on the verge of military defeat which is why they agreed to a cease fire and talks. That would not have happened if they had thought they were winning. Now we have thrown away our advantage.

Cannot beat a good stir-up to get them all twitchy!
I hold the opinion, that the Donaldson killing has got nothing to do with the peace process, and was orchestrated to coincide with Blair meeting Bertie.
Just how many lives Donaldson saved, or death sentences allowed to happen, on the grounds of necessity, will remain buried.
Did the security services provide him with an option to get out? Were they obliged to help him?
Now in our world of big names, with our life of illusion and quasi-illusion, people with solid virtues who can be admired for something more substantial than there well-known-ness often proves to be the unsung hero: the teacher, the nurse, the mother, the honest policeman, the hard worker at lonely, underpaid, unglamorous, unpublicized jobs.
Anonymous heroism… the things we do in our lives that are usually known only to ourselves.
Have a nice few days off Fritz, bonding with the nipper.

I just find it very sad that a life ends and that life is immediately seized for political showboating, newspaper sensationalism or jokes.
Nothing new of course, just sad.

Considering the amount of time you spend on this forum (and others) Our Andy, I'm slowly coming to the refreshing conclusion that you really are a senior copper, innit. There again with the amount of time I myself spend on here, I could well be the Deputy PM too. Have you thought about the consequences of the recent comments/promises by the future leader of the opposition Broon. 160,000+ new CSO's across the land asap, this means you lot'll be er, 'training' them, the very nature of their applicants mean they'll be proudly donning their uniforms and'll look more like coppers than coppers do, and many kids across the Country will think they are real coppers, and will know nuffink different!
Fritz von And when DCI CSO Sugden is asked on what grounds he is arresting this dozy taxi driver who proudly slept driving right across €urope to get his leg over, and moans about jumping on amber, Sugden will say, I'm holding him until Officer C arrives, as I don't have an er, Warrant, innit*
Don't tell anybody though, I do look like a real copper though don't I?*
